Endor [Monday, December 29]

Luke, a tall golden droid, and the Ewok chief Chirpa, were waiting for the volunteers when the portal finally deposited everyone on Endor. "Welcome," Luke said, giving them all a smile, "and thank you in advance for your help."

He gestured to the Ewok. "This is Chief Chirpa, the leader of Bright Tree Village, where we'll be staying for the next few days." Chirpa bowed to them, then spoke a few words. The droid shuffled forward to translate. "Chief Chirpa welcomes you to Endor," he said, words coming out pinched and precise, "and requests that you make yourself at home. If there is anything he or his warriors can do while you are assisting their neighbors, please let him know."

There was a brief conversation between Threepio and the Chief. "Or tell me and I will convey it," Threepio said. "I am C-3PO, human cyborg relations, and will be serving as translator for you during your stay here. Do watch out for the bugs, and the large drops, and the variety of creatures found in the forest..."

Luke shook his head at him and Threepio stopped speaking. "He worries a little too much," he explained with an easy smile. "If you'll follow me, you can drop off your stuff in the visitors' quarters and we can get started building some huts."

Wow. Not unlike Jaina, Tahiri was struck by what it was like to actually see the aftermath of the battle of Endor. The differance was that, given she'd been in shock for the aftermath of her only major battle action so far (and thus not exactly at her most observant), it was a lot more of a surprise to her.

Thus a lot of gaping as she worked.

There'd be a lot more than just gaping if she ended up dropping a log on her bare toes, though.

"Hey Tahiri," Hurley said, as he worked. "This place is amazing even to you, huh?"

"I've never been here," Tahiri said, carefully Force-nudging the end of one log into place. "I've heard a lot about it from . . ."

She tilted her head slightly in Luke's direction. "Older him, but actually seeing it is different. What do you think of another planet so far?"

"There's a lot of trees," Hurley said with a chuckle. "The locals are kinda... cute lookin'."

"Aren't they adorable?" Tahiri asked with a soft laugh. "It's like they're compensating for the looks of some of the species on my planet."

She glanced up toward the treetops . . . or as close to them as she could. It wasn't very close. "They're huge, but the trees on Kashyyyk are even bigger, if you can believe that." Good thing she didn't know what was going on with Ben on Kashyyyk. "You can put villages in these trees, but the wroshyrs support entire cities, and Wookiees are way bigger than Ewoks."

"Dude, that's awesome," Hurley said. "Entire tree-cities? That's so cool."

"It's pretty astral," Tahiri agreed. "But then the other side of the coin is desert planets like Tatooine, or ice planets like Hoth, or Ennth, where everything gets destroyed by volcanoe every eight years . . ."

"Dude, why would anyone live somewhere with a volcano that destroys everything?" Hurley asked.

"Because they're thermal?" Tahiri shrugged. "I don't get it either."

"I have an extra pair of boots, if you need them," said Hoshi, noticing the girl with bare feet.

The way Tahiri wrinkled her nose was a pretty clear indicator of what she thought of boots.

"Thanks," she said, "but unless it suddenly starts snowing or something, I think I'll be okay."

"If you say so," said Hoshi, still looking a bit nervous at the idea of working barefoot. "You know, I've seen you around school, but I don't think we've met. My name is Hoshi."

"I'm Tahiri," she answered, and wiped her hands on the legs of her jumpsuit before holding one out in greeting, the support beam she'd been putting up hovering in place behind her. "It's okay, I've gone pretty much without shoes for years now, honest."

Hoshi shook Tahiri's hand, but stared open-mouthed at the support beam and wondered if she was seeing things.

"I don't know if I could go without shoes," she said. "I even wear a pair of slipper socks to bed."

Tahiri laughed and glanced at the beam, then gestured with one hand, letting it settle completely into place. "I spent six years going around covered head to toe, all the time, because of sandstorms. I got to appreciate not having to do that any more."

Hoshi tried to shake it off, telling herself that she'd imagined what she'd seen. "I can understand that. My parents used to keep me isolated, so I love being able to talk and mingle with people now that I can," she said.

"That too," Tahiri agreed. "The Tusken aren't very talkative, especially not in Basic, so when I went to the Academy I talked a lot, just because I could."

Jaina was used to Tahiri's barefootedness, even if she wanted to wince at the thought of all the painful things she'd step on if she tried it. So instead she started off with, "Enjoying thie history lesson?"

"I'm not sure if enjoying is exactly the right word," Tahiri told her. "It's a little freaky."

That had more than a little to do with a mixed reaction to all the broken machinery lying around.

"Yeah. Between this and Ethics' little recreation of Jabba's palace, I'm beginning to think I can probably tell at least parts of the stories with better detail than my parents," she frowned.

"Now I'm wondering what Master Tionne's been leaving out of some of her other ballads," Tahiri agreed.

"To start, I'm sure it's hard to rhyme anything with 'carnage'," Jaina shrugged.

Tahiri snorted a brief laugh. "Maybe that's what she does in her spare time?"

Jaina sighed. "Great. Now I'm not going to be able to look at her without wanting to ask her if that's true."
