Saturday: Nemesis Island

It's amazing how different the atmosphere changes once you cross over the causeway to Nemesis island. True, it might be the same temperature and all but just setting foot on the island can give you goosebumps.

And if you meet up with of the residents here you might attacked for no good reason.

Which, sadly, is the slogan of the local tourism board.

Jaina had decided she really hated this place. Everything just felt wrong, the back of her head tingled constantly as her danger sense was working overtime, and she really hated that she couldn't just sense where Jacen was at any point in time.

Nevertheless, she found him, greeting him with, "Is there a reason you're hiding, or are you just trying to make this a challenge?"

"I didn't think it would be difficult for you," he replied, rising from his seat. "I must have overestimated your abilities."

"Not difficult, annoying," she corrected. "Last time my version of you pulled that, I had to threaten him not to."

"It's a useful technique," he said. "Keeps people on their toes. But enough about me, tell me about yourself. How are you coping since my demise?" Poking was more fun than conversation while he waited for the right moment to blow the teeter totter.

Even with him, there was no faster way to change her mood than to bring that up. "I'm coping," she said, a little shortly. "Isn't it strange for you to hear about that?"

Caedus turned a circle, his arms outstretched. "I'm standing here, aren't I? I must be stronger than your Jacen to have survived."

Jaina didn't think she should be offended by that, but she was. Especially when a very large part of her still believed Jacen's death to be partly her fault. "Strength had nothing to do with how he died," she insisted. "A lot of things could have been different."

"And a lot of things could be prevented," he added, twisting her words, hands clasped behind his back. "Luckily I managed to save myself at Myrkr."

That stung, and she assumed she must have made the same mistakes and choices in his time. "How did you?" she wondered.

"By not relying on anything but myself and my own knowledge and skills," he said proudly, deciding this encompassed everything he had learned from Vergere about pain and the Force. "What did you learn from Myrkr? Call me curious."

Oh, so many things. "I really don't want to talk about Myrkr, Jacen," she said, shaking her head. "You know what a nightmare that was and I just want to move on."

"Yes, let's move on," he replied with a smile, reaching out with the Force to spring his trap. With luck, she would be within range of the bomb and he wouldn't have to exert much effort to kill her.

A second before it went off, she had the instinct to move. This meant she was propelled further than she would have been normally, hitting the ground hard but tucking into a roll and covering herself from the debris of blown-up playground equipment.

When she thought things had stopped falling, she looked toward him, not understanding what had just happened.

Annoyed that his plan had failed, Caedus unhooked his lightsaber from his belt. "This would've been easier if you hadn't moved."

Jaina stood, and while realization was dawning, she was still somehow convinced the realization was very wrong. "What are you doing?" she asked, taking a couple steps back, not willing to reach for her own lightsaber just yet.

"I would hope you're smart enough to figure that out," Caedus replied, hearing the familiar snap-hiss as he brought his crimson blade to life.

Usually in her nightmares he was wearing a mask at his part. She shook her head, not moving any farther back. "Jacen, no. I can't fight you." And he shouldn't be able to fight her.

"Then I take it back," he said, slashing his blade high as he advanced. "This will be easy."

Still unable to believe this was happening, she finally pulled her lightsaber free and thumbed it on, even if she had no intention of attacking. She hadn't survived this long to have it end this way.

It would end however he wished it to end as Caedus was ready to force the fight, aiming his first blow to her chest.

Jaina brought her own lightsaber up to block, still not trying to go offensive. She wouldn't, couldn't do it. "You can still stop this," she told him, trying not to sound like she was pleading.

"Why should I?" He grabbed a hunk of debris with the Force and threw it at her back as their blades met.

She didn't even have a chance to avoid that, wincing as the debris connected. That'd bruise later. "Because it's me," she gritted out, rotating her blade to try and knock his away.

His hold was strong, but he used her rotation to propel himself into a spin, bringing his booted foot up to kick at her ribs.

Obviously she should have been spending more time in the salle and less in the flight shed. Grunting as she took the hit and staggered back a couple steps, she held her lightsaber up in a defensive position, still not willing to attack but welcoming any brief chance she had to catch her breath.
