Welcome to your first full day at Nihi Sumba, kids! The temperatures were in the late 70s and low 80s, the sun was shining, and the beaches were waiting.

And if lounging around wasn't your kind of thing, well, there was plenty to do around the island.

Rice Island Trek and Brunch

Looking to explore Samba immediately? This two-hour trek to Nihi’s own “Rice Island” is a diaspora of sights and sounds, starting from the beach, traversing over streams, through rice fields, and along the outskirts of local villages, down through the agricultural heart of Sumba. Grazing water buffalo, giggling school children, and farmers harvesting their crop offer another very special element of exploring this neighboring valley. Following the two-hour hike, you will be greeted with a picnic overlooking the sprawling rice paddies below. The return to the resort in an open-air safari vehicle drives through local villages, past schools and a few health clinics supported by our very own The Sumba Foundation. The entire experience provides another glimpse of Sumbanese culture.

Rosa figured she'd sign on to the first morning expedition that wouldn't take all day so that she could check off that Chaperone Duty box and spend the rest of her day surfing.

Hey, look, at least she was bothering to check that box in the first place, right?

You know what Anakin was avoiding as long as possible? Anything beach and sand related. So a two hour hike into the jungle sounded muggy and full of bugs but it didn't sound like he'd be washing sand out of his hair.

So here he was.

Surfing

If you've surfed before, you are in for some of the most amazing waves in the world. If you're a beginner, you're in for some classes before they let you out onto some of the most amazing waves in the world. Or you can sign up for a Surfari, where the resort provides a car, a boat, and a guide and you go out searching for that perfect wave.

Surfing was definitely not something Gladio had ever really done before, but he was intrigued about it and had been thinking about doing a lesson on it in his class one of these weeks, so the opportunity to get right in there with the gorgeous waves was definitely something he was going to take advantage of.

Especially now that his center of gravity was back where it should be, too.

Connor, with a good breakfast in him, had headed back to the room to change into his swim trunks and was now down at the beach, waiting for Cutter. He was both excited to be getting a lesson on windsurfing, but there was also that faint niggling of concern that he would just end up making a fool of himself. As he waited, Connor pushed that worry out of his mind, for the time being at least, and focused on the amazing view spread about before him.

A short time later Cutter arrived, after getting the appropriate gear that they needed so that he could try and teach Connor how to windsurf, he smiled when he saw him watching the view.

"It's pretty amazing isn't it?" he said softly as he approached.

"It is. Hard to believe places like this still exist right?"

"I know," Cutter smiled at Connor and then looked out at the ocean in front of them, "it's something I'll never get tired of looking at that's for sure, it's one of the reasons I love Wind Surfing, being out there in the elements, it's an incredible feeling,"

"Can imagine. Must be amazing," Connor said glancing back out over the water for a moment before turning back to Cutter. "I've been to the beach a few times on holiday and all, but never anywhere tropical and definitely nowhere like this!"

He gave a slight smirk and laughed softly. "I'm almost torn between wanting just to dive in head first and almost being afraid it will ruin the magic, ya know?"

Paddleboarding

Stand-up paddling is a fun and easy way to get a great full-body workout while enjoying the ocean and a few waves… a less technical and more manageable effort than surfing!

This was 100% up Dwight's alley and he couldn't think of a better way to celebrate being shaped like himself again than enjoying some time out on the waves and taking in the sights. The weather was gorgeous, and he was definitely glad he had remembered the sunscreen!

Steve had decided that paddleboarding sounded like a really swell time. He wasn't sure Tony would entirely agree, but Tony wasn't the boss of him! It was a partnership and there would be plenty of time for fruity drinks on the beach after lunch, right?

"This is great!" he yelled, grinning over his shoulder.

Maybe Steve's definitely-a-size-too-snug Thor-themed swim trunks helped mitigate the pain slightly.

Sumba Expedition [all day]

We will start by driving to the nearby area of Wanukaka where we will visit the old village of Weigali (where the monolith representing The Sumba Foundation is located) where you’ll receive an informative introduction to the Marapu way of life. After perusing some of the village’s arts and crafts, we will drive to Lapopu, a waterfall immersed in the jungle where you will have a chance to picnic in front of the turquoise pools.

It was the cultural aspects (okay, okay, and the meats-on-sticks) that had always had the biggest appeal for Amaya, right from that very first one to China, not only because it felt like, no matter where they went, there was something far more familiar to her in these local communities, but she almost always pulled inspiration from it in one way or another.

(And any meats-on-sticks also discovered along the way were just bonus).

Clare wasn't what you would call 'sporty' so here she was on the tourist tour today. She was looking carefully at the crafts for a souvenir for her ma.

Incredibly glad to be back in her own body in time to really get to see the island, Libby was thrilled to join the all-day tour to really start everything off on the right (and proper!) foot that day.

A day long expedition seemed like the perfect way to begin the trip, Belle thought. Especially now that she was back to her own familiar shape.

It seemed like it would be interesting, informative, and perhaps even a bit exciting.
