fh_trips | THE EKKA YAY! [All day Thursday and into night]

It's the first day of the Royal Exhibition! Come one, come all, ride the rides, eat fairy floss and dagwood dogs, corn on the cob on a stick and waffle tubes filled with cream. Sausage on a bun, butter sandwiches, chiko rolls, barbecue ribs - if it's chock full of bad for you Australian goodness, you'll likely find it here.

Finish your repast with a strawberry ice cream (the cone is filled with strawberry pieces, topped with strawberry ice cream, which is topped with cream, which is topped with a strawberry) as you wander through the exhibits (maybe picking up a pair of genuine Ugg boots), hit sideshow alley and win a giant teddy bear, visit the fresh food pavillion for delicious food and even better wine (lots of tasting and free samples), wander through the various animal barns and see the best of the best on display.

When you're done for the day, head on over to the Showbag Pavillion and load up on goodies, before you hop the train back to the city to snag a CityCat back to Fandom!

(Don't forget Brisbane's hottest Fireys will be on hand, selling calendars filled with shirtless firemen, all proceeds to benefit charity. And if you ask nicely, they'll even sign their photo.)

For wandering generally! Get a feel for the place (http://www.ekka.com.au/home/default.asp), get hopped up on junk food, or grab a ski-lift from one end of the Ekka to the other!

Angela had been avoiding the mainland since hearing all the horror stories about poisonous things, but even that couldn't keep her away from something like this.

She had a bag full of sugary things and was wandering, and checking out what this place was all about.

Amber was eating a dagwood dog, walking around, taking in the sights. She was thinking about the ski-lift but heights and all still freaked her out.

Naomi got some fairy floss as she had a look around.

Agnes wandered around, watching everything without staring, listening to conversations as she went by, fully observant while feigning disinterest. She wasn't wearing the hat -- today was a day for not calling attention to herself.

This place -- this thing -- this "Ekka" was an education all on its own.

Okay, this was the most fun ever and forget the height issue, Amber was soon laughing, forgetting all about her worries and recent emoing, and just enjoyed herself.

She was having so much fun.

Was it really any surprise that Charlotte was spending a good deal of time in an area referred to as the Retail Therapy Precinct (http://www.ekka.com.au/home/inner.asp?pageID=290&mainID=179)?

I think not.

The RACQ Insurance Animal Nursery was where Amber went next and ooooh! she got to feed a baby lamb. She fell in love and pretty much spent the better of an hour with the sweet little thing, on her knees, petting and making all kinds of baby noises at it.

Oooooh, fashions. Quick, guess where Brooke could be found!

It's important! SO important it gets it's own thread!

In addition to the deliciousness above, you can find all manner of food at the Ekka (http://www.ekka.com.au/home/inner.asp?pageID=198&mainID=178). Including butter sandwiches from the dairy farmers' pavillion.

Don't forget the Woolworth's Fresh Food Pavillion (http://www.ekka.com.au/home/inner.asp?pageID=293&mainID=179) (and all the rest)! It's full of goodies and treats and lots and lots of Queensland wines, which are some of the best in the world.

She bought nuts and chocolate, and cheese and olives (mm olives), and even a bottle of wine that was lovely. She would keep the bottle and use it for flowers. Just like her other wine bottle.

Amber loved this place.

Now this is what the Ekka is all about: the showbags (http://www.ekka.com.au/home/showbags_default.asp?pageID=181&mainID=0)! Bags of things you don't need and, away from the dazzle of the Ekka, half of which you certainly won't need, but it's fun!

It's not a trip to the Ekka if you don't come away with as many showbags as you can carry!

I am SO EXCITED about the Ekka! I'm going on Tuesday!

And Wednesday? Brisbane gets a puplic holiday so people can go to the fair. Seriously. It's called a Show Holiday! Sometimes I really love this country.
