Story Bridge Climb: All day

Arrangements had been made for Fandom dwellers to get a great discount on the Story Bridge Climb, and there were three tours going out today: morning, afternoon, and night.

Get kitted up in your bright orange safety gear and your harness, and climb the bridge to experience spectacular 360 degree views of Brisbane and the surrounding area.

Head out first thing in the morning, and see Brisbane as it's just waking up.

Any mist and cloud has burned off, leaving the view crystal clear.

Brisbane is a completely different city by night (http://www.queenslandarmchairguide.com/sb1.jpg), all lit up with its going to town clothes on.

Evey was a little bit wary, but mostly excited about going up. "I've never done anything like this before."

"Nor have I," Karal murmured. He wasn't entirely sure where Altra was, but he could see himself and Evey, so the 'cat couldn't be far. "I'm not sure whether to be terrified or exhilarated." He adjusted his harness, then took a deep breath and smiled in her direction. "Is it possible to be both?"

"I'll be there," she promised, reaching for his hand. "We're going to be fine. Don't be scared."

Karal squeezed her hand. "I know we are," he said, smiling again, and nodded. "I can't wait to see what it looks like from the top." Altra turned his head and Karal could see the group leader move out "Which will be sooner rather than later."

"Altra's going up with us?" she checked, glancing in the correct direction.

:As if you could stop me.: Altra yawned and sauntered after the group. :People will see what they want to see, and no one expects a cat.:

It made Karal chuckle. "This will be quite an adventure," he said, and took a tentative step forward, and then another.

Evey kept her hand in his, keeping an eye on him as she started up as well. "It's not every day you climb a bridge," she agreed. "In Australia. Where your island has migrated."

And that made him laugh outright, which banished the last of his worry. "And thank Vkandis for that!" It was a long way to the top, but the steps were smooth and evenly spaced, and he knew Evey wouldn't let him misstep. "It's beautiful here," he added. "I'd like to spend some time exploring the city, if we get the chance."

"It's beautiful on the ground, too," she said, nodding and looking out. "Very...clean."

It was an odd description, but the first one that struck her.

"Yes," he agreed. "And the river is beautiful. I somehow would have expected that, with so many people, it would be dirty or filled with garbage, but it's not." Altra paused, turning to look out over the river at the reflected lights, and Karal smiled softly. "So many people, yet it seems so peaceful."

"Much more than home," she said pensively, looking out over the view.

Karal squeezed her hand. "Give it time," he said softly. "This city has never faced what yours has."

"Hope it doesn't have to," she said quietly, eyes wide as she took in the view.

He rubbed her palm with his thumb, trying to distract her from her thoughts. "It won't," he said with great certainty, starting to get slightly out of breath from the climb. The view through Altra's was breathtaking, even at this level, and he stopped for a moment to simply appreciate it. "From what I've seen so far, the people who live here seem far too laid back for it to happen."

She nodded, shaking off her thoughts. "I agree," she said. "It's very...sparkly up here. I've never seen a city from so high, like this."

"I have, but only once. Not long after I came here, I went on a trip to a city called New York and went to the top of the Empire State Building." He smiled at the memory. "It was amazing. While we were in New York, Gavin and I became trapped in an evil toy store."

"And what made the store evil?" she asked, arching a brow and unsure whether the 'evil' was real evil or evil-for-the-sake-of-storytelling.

Karal sighed and shook his head, still smiling. "Mostly that neither Gavin nor I had much experience in this world and none at all in one of its largest cities. There were very disturbing toys," and he still thought some of them had been evil, or at least had the potential for it, "and a revolving door. We, umm, got stuck." He knew he was going pink and concentrated on climbing higher.

Evey burst out laughing, yes.

Karal sighed, hanging his head, then chuckled. "I know, but we'd never seen one before. It was quite frightening!"

Ino blinked up at the bridge. "Wow." Pretty.

[For Lana!]

"Oh my god," Lana said, completely awed by the sight of it. "And we're going to climb this? In the dark?"

"We so are," Ino said, big-eyed and completely gleeful.

"Would this be a good time to tell you I'm afriad of heights?" Lana teased.

"I wouldn't believe you!" she laughed. "Or you'd have said something earlier!"

"Damn straight, I would have," Lana said. "Still... it's a little intimidating. I'm not brave like you."

"There's all sorts of bravery," Ino noted, ducking her head to fiddle with her harness a bit. "The fact that mine's more flamboyant than yours doesn't make your courage any less."

Lana smiled over at her. "You always make me feel better about myself."

That got a bit of a shrug. "I'd be a pretty bad friend if I always made you feel worse, yeah?" Ino said, smiling and glad the dark hid her blush. "Your harness all set?"

"Lucky for me, you're a great friend," Lana said, turning her own attention to her harness. "Yeah, I think it's good."

She blushed worse. "Want me to start up first?" Ino asked. "Or would you rather go, so I can steady you?"

"You go," she said. "That way I can watch and see what you do."

"I'll do my best then," Ino grinned, carefully start the climb.

Lana took a deep breath, then started up after her.

I have never done this and I really, really must.
