Washington, DC [Friday, May 5th, 2017]

It was a beautiful, crisp, clear day in Washington, DC. The spring flowers were blooming, but the pollen count was reasonable. Hoards of kids bussed in from the suburbs were laughing on the Mall and spilling out from the various Smithsonian museums.

There was so sign at all in this universe that Donald Trump had ever existed.

Steve had pulled a few strings with SHIELD, and there were various private tours set up around town by people eager to impress Captain America. Steve...would mostly be avoiding those in a vain attempt to stay under the radar. His ball cap, light jacket and jeans screamed "leave me alone" to anyone who spoke superhero, even if the Brooklyn Dodgers insignia on the hat gave him away more than a little.

Welcome to Washington, DC, Fandom. Enjoy your field trip!

Well, Tony had been to the museum already and didn't really need listen to a certain song as it was just stuck in his head.

And most of the other places had some... not so great memories. Which would be why he was traumatizing some poor guide by politely just existing in a tour group of SHIELD headquarters.

Yeah, well, Rhys didn't know that. Which was why he was nursing a bruised arm and glaring at the people playing.

Maturely.

Goody, in slightly less archaic clothing that were sorely lacking in fluer de lis, was checking out the Lincoln Memorial.

Because that was a thing. Yep.

Look, Kanan kind of had a reason to be interested in keeping an eye on the development of Earth flight technologies, here. So, when he came across the exhibit about Steve - the one he hadn't mentioned out loud, yes - he needed to kind of stop and gawk for a while.

And then grin.

And then laugh. Just. Laugh forever at the kickline. He was getting dirty looks from other museum patrons, but whatever. This was gold.

Most of Peridot's day, it would seem, was going to be spent trying to patiently explain to concerned passers-by that she wasn't lost, and that, no, she didn't have parents that she needed to be returned to.

This outing was shaping up to be not quite as educational as she was hoping it would be.

Eliot had been in DC any number of times, but this was one of the few that wasn't a working vacation. As far as he knew there wasn't even a Vance in this world to recruit him to one of his ridiculous missions — which was great, Eliot could do without getting shot again, thanks.

So he was at the NMAI. He liked to hit this place up when he got the chance, especially the Native art exhibits. There was a gorgeous photography exhibit on right now where he was all set to spend the whole morning.

Then it'd be time for fry bread. God he loved fry bread.

"Wow, that's an 'ugh, people' look if I've ever seen one," Tip said. "Want me to start glaring at people preemptively? Sometimes they stare less if you travel in groups."

"Yes," Peridot agreed immediately. "Yes, I require your services in glaring at peopl-OH MY STARS."

Guess who just noticed your hair, Tip.

"YOU CAN SHAPESHIFT?"

And who had never witnessed a haircut before.

"Um," said Tip. ". . . No. I don't -- why would you --" Her eyes widened a bit and she ran her hand over her very short, fuzzy hair. "Right. Soooooo. Humans do this thing called 'getting a haircut'."

Well. That earned a pause. And a squint.

Many things were pause-and-squintworthy about this, apparently.

"Why?"

"Lots of reasons," Tip said. Now that she knew what had Peridot in a bit of a tizzy, this felt like slightly more familiar ground. Boov didn't have hair either. "Our hair grows, you know. Like, all the time. So if you want your hair to always look the same, you have to cut it sometimes. And if you want to have a totally different look — kind of like shapeshifting, I guess — hair's a really easy, painless way to do it. And since you know it's growing, you know anything you do to it is pretty temporary."

She shrugged. "In my case, a big section of it got shot off by a Boov gun and it looked really stupid, so I cut the rest off to even it out. But I like it. It's . . . different. And it takes way less time to get ready in the morning."

"Oooooh." Well, that actually made a certain sort of sense that Peridot could follow. She liked that about Gratuity. She made sense. Peridot tilted her head the other way, considering that for a moment. "I like it."

And she was slightly jealous. But mostly she liked it.

Tip grinned. "Thanks. Hey, have you ever tried styling your hair differently? I know you're not organic or anything, but it . . . kinda looks like it could be human hair. I bet if we used some ribbons or barrettes or something, we could make it be at least a slightly different shape."

"Ada did something with it once," Peridot offered, looking thoughtful. "We had to blend in, in one of our classes, and she..."

Peridot reached up and kind of grabbed a handful of hair on either side of her head, doing her best impression of pigtails.

"She made it do this."

... It was kind of stupidly adorable.

It really was.

"Well, if it can do that it can definitely do other fun things," Tip said. "We can try some out sometime if you want."

"We can go see the Hope Diamond again, after lunch, right?" Parker checked. "Just to see if it's the same color here." And if the security was the same, or if she had a new system to conquer.

"If you want. I was thinkin' of seeing if the African-American Museum still needs tickets in this universe, but Natural History's on the way."
