SPRING BREAK, Cyseal, Monday Morning

Good morning, Fandom!

And a good one it was: the sun was shining brightly, infusing the city with warmth. Birds were singing, and a gentle breeze wafted through town (it only faintly smelled like sulfur up in the northern quarters).

Time to get up, explore Cyseal, and make friends with the neighbors!

~~Now why would anyone dress locally when you could wear your own clothes?~~

Lucille gave a small nod in return. She didn't know his name, but his face was familiar. A teacher perhaps?

"I would assume they want to sell things, but that would mean I had to know what I wanted to buy."

Hannibal smiled. "You won't know what they have if you don't explore."

He held out a hand to her. "Forgive me; I don't believe we've met. Doctor Hannibal Lecter; I teach at the school."

She smiled a genuine smile as she took his hand. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, dr Lecter. I am miss Lucille Sharpe. " And you are right, but that also means I need to make a decision about what I might need." Her funds were rather limited, but she was not about to admit that.

"Pleased to make yours, Miss Sharpe." An actual teenager with manners was so rare!

Hannibal shrugged. "I prefer to explore, to see new things before making a decision. Whether I purchase anything or not, there may be quite a lot to learn. For instance, do you think their potions work medically or magically?" He chuckled and leaned in as if sharing a confidence. "Or perhaps not at all, and it will be a terrible scandal?"

People with manners were very rare in Fandom, generally, and Lucille was pleased to have met one of the few.

"Before Fandom I would have firmly believed they could not work at all," Lucille said with an amused smile. "Now I am less certain. Perhaps that is exploration? But I was thinking more along the lines of what I need. There is only so much you can try, after all."

Then, with a chuckle of her own, she added: "Although perhaps then we would miss that scandal."

"Ah - then you, like me, are from one of those worlds without magic?" Hannibal nodded. "This would all have been quite unthinkable before I came to Fandom, and I'm still learning of new things."

He smirked. "Can you imagine the reaction if you or I were to send home even the simplest of these spells? I know of grown men who would go mad seeing them." Frederick Chilton.

She gave a small nod and half a smile. "Strange to think that even a benevolent spell could turn into a curse of madness if sent to the wrong person." She hadn't thought about it before, but now she could think of a few who would deserve that. Most of the staff at the asylum, for example.

"So I can expect to keep being surprised for quite some time?"

"Fandom is endless surprises," Hannibal answered, "both pleasant and less so. What is your world like - is there any advanced technology, or people with unusual abilities, or other species? Or is it dreadfully boring in comparison, like mine?"

"I left my world in 1888," Lucille said. "From what I understand the history here is the same as in my world, but without the... strangeness. So I think that means it is as boring as yours. Do you ever miss that?"

"Never," Hannibal said. "I love a challenge, and I enjoy new things. Although I haven't had to deal with the time change as well - my world's history is on a par with Fandom's, whereas you would be coming from over a century ago. I imagine that's difficult on its own."

"I have come to understand that this time has its advantages," Lucille replied. "Although there are many things I prefer to hold on to." Good manners and proper clothing most of all. Then, with the tiniest of smiles, she added: "Perhaps I prefer the challenges here too."

"Would you consider visiting the shop with me?" She nodded towards the window.

Hannibal glanced at the shop, then back at her, and bowed slightly. "Miss Sharpe, I would be pleased to. Shall we?"

Lucille's smiled widened and she responded with a small curtsy, before pushing the door open.

In side the shop where shelves lined with strange bottles and other objects ~~I'm assuming~~, the purpose of which was mostly unclear. The shopkeeper looked up as they entered.

"Good afternoon," Hannibal said. "We're only browsing for now. Which of your wares would you recommend to out-of-towners?"

The saleswoman eyes them for a moment as if to assess their needs, and then firmly placed a two small bottles at the counter. "This one's really popular. Gives you extra strength. Always a good thing."

Lucille shot dr Lecter an amused look. "I have to admit that is rarely something I need."

Hannibal smirked back. "Nor I. Although I suppose it could prove amusing." He thought for a moment. "Is gambling considered poor manners where you're from? You could win a good amount of money and put rude men in their places, challenging them."

Hannibal Lecter: positive role model.

What a wonderful suggestion!

"It's frowned upon, but I believe we should not let ourselves be completely ruled by convention." She looked at the saleswoman. "Although rather than strength I would prefer something that improved one's skill with blades."

No, Lucille. This is a bad idea.

The woman put the strength potions away and set down two others. "Extra dexterity. Help you dodge and weave with the best."

Hannibal smiled at them both. "Blades?" he asked Lucille. "A very useful pursuit."

"One that would not be considered appropriate for me in my time. I have friends here who are kind enough to teach me. Is that something you practice as well, then?"

She picked up one of the bottles and looked closer at it. "Do you think this will work in Fandom too, dr Lecter?"

"I should think so," Hannibal answered, "but there's only one way to find out, I suppose." He picked up the other and sniffed it, taking in the scents of all the ingredients.

"I'm a surgeon and a chef," he said to Lucille with a small smile. "I'm very fond of knives."

"An unexpected combination," Lucille observed. "But requiring similar tools." If women in Fandom fought with knives it made sense that men would cook with them.

She looked at the potion bottle. "Perhaps I should buy one." There was probably someone she could use it against.

"They have more in common than you might think," Hannibal answered easily.

"Why not?" Hannibal gave the shopkeeper a winning smile. "I imagine if we each bought one, we could get some sort of discount. Particularly if we can't be certain it will work at home."

"They have?" Lucille asked.

At the attempt to haggle, the shopkeeper shook her head. "The price is low enough as it is. You won't find potions of this quality to the same price anywhere around here."

Perhaps because there was only one place selling potions.

Hannibal shrugged; he could probably talk her into giving them the potions for free, if he wanted to take the time, but he could think of more interesting things to do, so he took out the local currency he'd exchanged for and purchased one.

"Both require a certain knowledge of anatomy and chemistry," he said to Lucille. "As well as the ability to use sharp objects to best effect," he added with a grin.

Lucille bought the other one. She decided she could afford it, and it might prove interesting.

"It does make sense when you put it that way," she said. "I have little knowledge of any of it, I'm afraid." That was mostly true, anyway.
