Riften, Skyrim, Saturday Morning

Today was the last full day in Skyrim for the folks from Fandom, so it was time to make it count! The weather was still cool but sunny, and the town might not have been quite as busy with people recovering from last night's festivities, but there was still plenty to do before fall break was over!

The Bee and Barb Inn - Rooms

The Bee and Barb is considerably larger than Frostfruit, warmer, and built out of sturdy wood. Its rooms are larger and more lavish as a result, provide a tub of their own - though you'll have to go downstairs to get heated water for it -and even have their own small walled-off bucket-toilet area. Said bucket-toilet actually has a comfortable seat and is cleaned out twice a day, so that's a step up, isn't it?

There are either two twin beds or one queen bed to a room. Minor healing and resistance to frost potions are provided in the room, and the maid makes sure there's lavender flowers in each room, providing a pleasant smell.

Edward laid in bed with his pillow pulled over his head again, but this time it had rather more to do with the questionable quantities of ale he'd consumed the previous night than anything else.

The Bee and Barb Inn - Common Room

The Bee and Barb's common room is larger than Frostfruit's, and while it doesn't contain a central fire pit, there are sconces everywhere keeping the place at a comfortable level of heat. It doesn't hurt that Riften is further south than Rorikstead, either.

Serving you is the Argonian Talen-Jei and his equally-lizardlike barkeeper Keerava. Neither peddles in dog meat, but many of the other delicacies of Skyrim are available. The local specialty is cheese. And fish. Lots of fish. Also, Talen-Jei is a connoisseur of cocktails, so if you want something really special to drink, ask him for suggestions!

The Bee and Barb is a popular place, and you'll find many Nords drifting in and out of the common room during the evening.

Riften - Marketplace

The thriving marketplace is the very heart of Riften. Here, you can buy weapons and potions from Brand-Shei, food and clothing from Marise Aravel, various odds and ends from Grelka - and pretty jewelry from Madesi.

Riften - Hall of the Dead

The Nords hold great respect for their gods, and Arkay - the god of funeral rites - is no different. The Hall of the Dead is where the bodies of deceased Nords are kept and rituals are performed. Riften's is a lovely building with many arcs and flags; it's worth a visit to pay some respect.

Flick had no idea why he'd ended up here but there he was. He didn't really do any kind of religion but he could take a moment to look around, see how things went here.

Riften - The Temple of Mara

Mara is the Goddess of love, and has her home in the temple in Riften. Marriage rites are performed here - in case anyone is having any ideas - but it's also a surprisingly fun place to sit and listen to people gossiping about other people's love lives.

If you wanted something to talk about when you got back home, today might be your last chance...

Riften - The Ratway

No one in Riften is going to just point you here, but the Ratway is an important part of the city's infrastructure. It's a complex maze of tunnels underneath the city that can be accessed through doorways in the lower areas of the canal. Here, you'll find the Ragged Flagon, the pub that is a popular destination for most of Riften's thieves and mercenaries.

Don't ask how Alana ended up in a drinking contest in the Ragged Flagon. Just know that she won, and fund the thrill of victory entirely worth puking every three blocks all the way home.

Riften - Mistveil Keep

Mistveil Keep is the home of the local Jarl, the leader of Riften. It's a beautiful keep that hosts wonderful tapestries as well as the Court Wizard, Wylandriah, who will enchant items for you for a fee.

Riften - Walk Around Riften

Riften is a lovely city with many trees. There's much to see here that doesn't really require you to do anything but walk - such as the boardwalk that overlooks the lake and the forest on the other side.

Much like yesterday's accidental house-decorating, wandering around meant that Gwen somehow wandered into someone's house. No one seemed to be home, and while she intended to leave right away, this place looked interesting and Gwen had all sorts of problems respecting boundaries. She checked out their books, mentally critiqued the decor, and when she walked out and realized she'd somehow taken a wheel of cheese with her, she honestly had no idea how that happened.

One trip starts early today, as it's a long trek up north...

Outside Riften - Winterhold

Today's trip is a special one: straight up north to the ruined town of Winterhold, which is home to the College of Winterhold, Skyrim's own school for mages. The College is famous for several things: one, containing the largest library of rescued books from all over Skyrim and beyond; two, containing a great deal of magical experts who hold lectures on a regular basis; and three, being maybe potentially nobody is sure responsible for the destruction of the town itself. Whoops.

The building itself is a remarkable feat of architecture, built into a large cliff that is connected to the mainland only by an incredibly long bridge. The two halls for apprentices are to the left and right, but they aren't open to the public. However, the large lecture hall straight ahead past the courtyard is, and from there you can venture towards the Arcanaeum, Winterhold's fabled library. Lectures are also currently being held, for those who are interested.

Well, there'd been that word again, 'mage'. She'd figured it out earlier that it meant about what she was used to calling warlocks, and she couldn't help being curious. She'd made the trip over, and was currently in the courtyard, pretending to look at architectural features when really, she was making observations about the people she could see around.

Maybe she'd attend a lecture a little later.

Nathan knew this magic wasn't going to be the same as his but he wanted to anyway. He wanted to try and learn about any and all kinds of magic so he'd be prepared when his Gift manifested.

Felicity preferred to do her nerdery online but she had been known to read a book or two. So the library was going to be her home for today.

Oh, was there a library? Goodbye, everyone, Cosette was going to disappear into it for a while.

If she came out of there with a slightly improved aptitude for destruction (not that she'd indulge it, probably), that was what you got for flipping through as many books as possible in Skyrim.

Anders had been excited about this trip as soon as he heard of the idea. He spent his time in Winterhold attending lectures and chatting with every mage who came within earshot. It was amazing to see what magic-users could accomplish in a world that didn't lock them away.

Outside Riften - Explore The Area Around Riften

It's not too cold out here, and the forest surrounding Riften offers quite a nice walk. And if that's not quite your speed, well, for the more shopping-minded, there's a Khajit caravan camped right outside the gates. The management cautions against ingesting too much Skooma.

Outside Riften - Adventuring

While there are no giants near Riften, there are certainly dragons, and the many forts in the area are host to bandits. Even walking in the forests can turn out badly thanks to the local wildlife, such as bears, wolves, and Frostbite Spiders.
