Bali [Sunday afternoon and evening, February 23, 2014]

After a few Portalocity mixups that took the Fandomites first to Bali, Democratic Republic of Congo, then to Bali, Bhutan with a mandatory singalong to Bali Ha'i as they waited, everyone finally arrives at the Grand Hyatt Bali, where complimentary fruit juice is waiting in your rooms, students, and something a little stronger is awaiting the chaperones. Take a moment to snap pictures of everyone in their welcome flower garland necklaces, then check into your rooms and take the chance to explore the hotel and its many amenities today: Bali itself can wait until tomorrow.

It's a balmy 80 degrees (29C) and the breeze smells like flowers and whatever's cooking for dinner at the various restaurants on the complex. Spring Break is going to be great.

Students are checked into King Club rooms in the East Village where one king bed (or two twins) takes up some of the 49 square meter room (http://www.bali.grand.hyatt.com/en/hotel/rooms/grand-club.html) with views of either tropical gardens or a serene lagoon, depending on what side of the complex you fall on. Luxurious appointments include marble bath with separate shower, a batik robe, slippers, and complimentary Internet access. The slippers and robe are NOT complimentary. Cade. Chaperones are housed in the larger suites (http://www.bali.grand.hyatt.com/en/hotel/rooms/suite.html), complete with sitting rooms and views of the beach, far enough away not to hear the shenanigans students get up to while still remaining legally liable for their actions. Room 206

Isabelle had way too much luggage with her. And all of it got unceremoniously dumped on or next to her claimed bed before she called room service for tropical sliced fruit, and then went out on the balcony to check out the view.

She didn't have a whole lot of experience with places like this beyond the previous break, but that was all the experience she really needed to know how to deal with fancy hotels.

Suite 1108

Apparently Hanna's students weren't the only ones who remembered her being male. But there were a limited number of chaperones on this trip, so she had little doubt she was the one supposed to be Hannibal Lecter. Really, this was quite interesting; she wondered how far the differences went.

But for now, she set her things in the bedroom with the king-sized bed, unpacked, changed into something more suited to the climate, and sat out on the balcony to enjoy the warmth for a bit.

Kitty was soooo ready to not be in Fandom for a little while, so this vacation was pretty much perfect timing. And of course once she got to the room, she had to toss her bag somewhere, check out the view and see the beach where she was going to spend probably her entire next week, and then flop on the bed. Just to test it out.

It was her "first five minutes in a new hotel room" system and it worked for her.

This was one of the largest and nicest places Jack had ever spent the night: She didn't even know places on earth came this pretty. (Plus, no one was trying to kill her, which was always a plus.) She lingered over her unpacking while Natasha napped on the balcony.

Room 216

Please excuse Cosette for carrying her bag in (carrying her own bag for once, not having her father carry it for her, that was significant), putting it down, and then proceeding to gawk at just the bathroom for approximately half an hour before pulling her phone out to take pictures of . . . yes, the inside of the hotel room in exhaustive detail. She was -- as her excitable text message to her father said -- fairly convinced that not even the palace at Versailles had anything quite as nice as this.

Wait until she actually ventured outside.

Before she did anything else, Sia picked her side of the room and started unpacking. She hated living out of bags, and the sooner she could get this done, the sooner she could see the rest of the hotel. Mainly the pools.

This was already really different from the Italy trip, and Gert definitely intended to spend as much time out of the hotel as possible. But the portal antics had made for a fairly exhausting morning, so she thought she could get away with taking a brief nap before heading out.

She made a point of setting an alarm, though -- she didn't want to waste too much time.

The Lagoon Pool, set in parallel to the white sandy coast line of Nusa Dua, provides a breath-taking view of the off-shoring waves of the Indian Ocean. You can relaxy as you float down the River Pool in the surrounding of lush tropical gardens, lily ponds and lagoons, or just simply have a splashing fun in the waterslides. Located in the North Village, the Balinese-featured Pool is inspired by the fabled Balinese water palaces of old. Dedicated exclusively for our Club guests, which Fandom is, the Grand Club Pool is located in the East Village, adjacent to the Grand Club Lounge and just steps from your room. Finally, the Bay Club Pool is located within the area of The Bay Club Fitness & Health Centre. If it helps make up your mind, the Poolside Bar (http://www.bali.grand.hyatt.com/en/hotel/dining/PoolsideBar.html) is by the River Pool, and they serve food and drink all day.

A vast range of activities is available for the active vacationers. There are also three floodlit tennis courts, a jogging trail and a putting green. The Bay Club opens from 7am to 10pm daily, with 24hr access to the gymnasium only.

The Hyatt is located on more than 650 meters of pristine white beach that's only a short walk from the Poolside Bar. Grab a towel and some sunscreen and laze the day away. It is vacation.
