"No Ethan Fromme, gotcha," Angela said. "I have the same reaction to Kafka. I'm sure he's good, but we spent so much time on The Metamorphis.."

Here eyes grew big as she scanned "Into the Wild," by Jon Krakauer. "Oooh. This is cool. It's about some moron who walked away from his life, went camping in Alaska and starved to death."

"You have a thing for books with tragic figures, don't you?" Marty asks with a little grin. "Not that I'm complaining mind you. Just an observation."

Angela thought about it a second, then laughed. "I guess," she said. "Totally unconscious, though."

"I guess I like reading about people with more exciting lives than my own. Usually, they end badly." She shrugged, a little self-conscious.

"Your life isn't exciting?" Marty said clearly amused. "You go to school with people from other planets, mutants, a vampire and you're dating a guy with... um a history. I think most people would consider that exciting. Also crazy but still exciting."

"Right, but I've only been here since September," Angela countered. "I've been reading since I was four or something. Old habits die hard, all of that."

"Maybe I should look for something with a happy ending. Be unpredictable."

"Something good to read with a happy ending... hmmm," Marty looks around the bookstore trying to think of a good book. "Okay the only thing I'm coming up with are trashy romance novels."

"Zero was reading those in the library a couple weeks ago," Angela said. "She found one about a pirate and a ninja. It was the most ridiculous thing ever."

"A pirate and a ninja? OTP! Was it a girl pirate or ninja?" Marty asked. "Or do I really want to know?"

"The girl was the ninja, the boy was the pirate," Angela said. "I think. And then the sequel was about their daughter, and she got kidnapped by and fell in love with -- in that order, okay -- some dude who was half-Native American, half Scottish Highlander."

"It was pretty silly. Want me to ask Zero if you can borrow them?"

"Me? Read trashy novels? What kind of guy do you think I am?" Marty said trying to establish his masculinity.

"The kind who cried at the end of Princess Bride?" Angela joked. "Okay, no trashy romance novels. Maybe a trashy sci-fi novel?"

"I told you, someone was cutting onions in the kitchen. Probably that ninja with that giant sword of hers," Marty protested lightly. "I think I can deal with Sci-fi though. Lord knows we practically live it over on the island."

Then, impulsively, she leaned up and gave him a light kiss. "This is an awesome trip."
