Kargi Bay to Fethiye, Turkey, Friday Daytime

After breakfast, it was time for the gulets to take a relaxing sail to the town of Fethiye, population 68,000. This town is ripe for shopping and sightseeing, as well as an optional excursion to the gorge of Saklikent and the Blue Lagoon.

There was still some vacation left to be had, and with temperatures in the mid-80s, almost anything was possible.

"Yeah, i never pictured you for the beach type," she admitted. "How have you been training?" Because she knew how she was managing it, but Clint might've had good ideas. And Kate was curious.

"We're on vacation. What makes you think I'm training?" Clint asked, focusing on his footwork instead of accidentally looking at Kate to see if she could spot his lying.

"Cause it's like music - miss one day & you know. Miss two days and everyone else knows too," Kate replied. "Besides what happened to 'not much good at sitting around?',

"Yeah, I did say that out loud, didn't I?" Clint said, shrugging. "The beaches have mostly all been nice places to run, and I've been sneaking shooting practice in at night, when people are less likely to notice. Have you been keeping up too?"

Kate smirked at him as the player had a heartattack that'd shed co-opted narrative. "Mornings. While everyone's sleeping it off." Not that she was opposed to a good 'sleeping it off' but it seemed pathetic to go on her own.

She picked through a tricky spot then asked "so what's this about minions?"

"Minions is an awesome word," Clint said, smirking at her as he weaved he way behind her. "Do you not like it?"

Re: Explore the Sakilikent Gorge and the Blue Lagoon

[identity profile] hawkeye-too.livejournal.com 2013-03-02 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um, no. It's a terrible word," Kate told him. "It's like 'sidekick only more supervillainy."

Yeah. Or something.

"Hey, good guys can have minions too," Clint insisted. "That word has a lot of meanings. I don't mean it in a bad way. I think it's pretty amazing there are so many archers around. I'm used to... you know, that not being the case."

"I know of no other good guys with minions. Did you make that up?" Kate shot him a Look of Complete Disagreement.

But he kind of had a point about the archers. "It could maybe be worse, i guess. You could be captain of the archery club."

"I might have made that up. It's possible I don't know what to call all of you," Clint admitted. "If anything, you're probably the captain of the archery club, with your skills."

"I've got skills," Kate agreed offhandedly. Even if she still couldn't make that stupid Robin Hood shot. "But I'm not the one with minions."

"According to you, I don't have minions," Clint pointed out. "And you're not really my--I mean, I know you all talk to me about stuff, but I'm not a good leader or anything."

"Maybe people who can lead pick up other weapons. Not bows," she said. Or people who should lead. People who didn't lead their team into disaster.

"Well, it's kind of hard to lead when you're separated from the rest of your team. I mean, it's nice to be able to see the whole playing field," Clint said. "But there's a difference between calling plays and suggesting them, you know?"

"I should've watched football because there's a great quarterback joke there that I have no hope of making," Kate decided.

Tragedy.

"Hey, you know what I meant. You of all people, I'd think," Clint said. "Do you wish you could be in charge sometimes?"

Kate's posture stiffened - she was Kate Bishop, and she was in charge when she damn well wanted to be in charge. And then she looked down again.

"I do know," she admitted. "But last time I was in charge, everything went to hell. Better that I'm not." She looked over at him. "The you in my wold has led a bunch of teams."

"Really? And the world hasn't ended?" He was at least partly kidding. "I'm willing to bet things didn't go to hell entirely because of you. Sometimes shit happens and there's nothing you can do to stop it."

"If it did, you went back and fixed it so good job on that," she snorted then added straightforwardly, without self-pity. "And...I know I didn't cause all of it, but it doesn't change that I led the mission and two of my friends died."

Okay, she was going to be embarrassed at telling him that in a second. Way to go, Kate. At the same time, even if he wasn't the Hawkeye she knew, he still felt like Hawkeye. Which was both confusing and made her trust him more than she probably should.

Clint gave Kate a sympathetic look, and made sure to lower his voice so no one else would hear. Maybe that would reduce the embarrassment at least a little? "I'm sorry about your friends. Do you really think you could have stopped whatever happened to them?"

She sloshed through the water or a few more steps, going over the events she'd gone over a million times before. "Maybe not. But maybe someone else could've or stopped other bad decisions leading to it." Like letting Cassie try to save Mr. Lang. Or any one of the thousand freakin terrible decisions.

"I know this is going to sound like crap, but trust me when I say that going over the past over and over again doesn't change it," Clint said. "It's tempting to try to figure out all the mistakes you made and--it's not that you won't make them again, but it just sucks to think about it all the time, and you shouldn't put yourself through that."

"You find good people who tell you it wasn't your fault, even if you don't believe it. 'Cause eventually it starts to sink in a little," Clint said. "And it's like, if they still care about you, even if if was your fault, then maybe you're not terrible." Hey, maybe Clint's terrible life experience could be useful for something after all.

Would that really work? Was it supposed to work? It sounded possible. She half-smiled. "That sounds suspiciously like good advice, Hawkeye."
