Kargi Bay to Fethiye, Turkey, Friday Daytime

After breakfast, it was time for the gulets to take a relaxing sail to the town of Fethiye, population 68,000. This town is ripe for shopping and sightseeing, as well as an optional excursion to the gorge of Saklikent and the Blue Lagoon.

There was still some vacation left to be had, and with temperatures in the mid-80s, almost anything was possible.

Emily made her way to the sun deck looking like she had been sleeping on the floor, which was a fairly accurate description of her night, actually. "Miss Solo," she said while holding up a cushion. "Would you mind holding this and smothering me? That would be the best birthday present ever."

"Sorry, I have a personal rule against killing on vacation," Jaina replied, and the thing is, she wasn't even kidding.

Emily sighed, and then just let herself fall somewhere moderately comfortable looking. "Do I want to know why you needed that rule? Anyway...dad to try. This day is just going to get better and better."

"It hasn't been going on too long," Jaina said, ignoring the first question because no, Emily probably didn't want to know why. "It can always improve."

She did, but arguing with a headache was not that appealing, honestly. "Not today, or at least not for me. I thought drinking myself silly would help, but then again..." Emily said as she raised a hand and waved it. "Sorry, this isn't something I should be talking with...well, and adult? Teacher?" Who should she be talking this, Emily had no idea.

"Probably not something you want to be admitting to me, no," she agreed. Not that she'd do anything about it, but as a general rule. "Might help to get out a little, do something. That doesn't involve alcohol."

"That snarky counselor didn't come, did she?" asked Emily without much hope. "I plan to get out, and probably collapse somewhere nice. No alcohol for a while," said Emily as she battled with herself to at least sit up. "I would say worst birthday ever but...yeah." Even though, Emily smiled to the bitter memories that came in flooding for a moment before she shut them down again.

"She's around somewhere," Jaina said. "Do you need to talk about it?"

She was one if the worst people to talk to about bad stuff ever, but she supposed she could give it a go.

"I wonder; in reality is as simple as saying that my birthday got totally screwed by some bad things happening some time ago and now every year I just get reminded of it, which is kind of depressing," Emily said in one to and without stopping, because that was about the only way she could say it. "Kinda lame, I know."

"What's lame about it? There's no better way to remember bad stuff by associating a date with it that you can't forget," Jaina pointed out.

"I want to forget, if possible; I mean what's the point on keep opening the wound," Emily said as she flopped back on the couch.

"Wounds stay open sometimes. And then all you can really do is cover them up as much as you can," Jaina told her. "Instead of trying to forget it, give yourself new memories. Next year think of the birthday you spent having fun in a foreign country and focus on that instead of the bad stuff."

She was not going to be able to do the same thing come August, but it was easy to say.

"So easier said than done. Maybe next year I'll manage though, even though this is the kind of thing that builds up days before, if not weeks before," Emily said as she realized she had actually suffered a lot less because of the trip.
