Getting Out Into Coruscant [Friday morning into Saturday afternoon]

Anakin pointed out of one of the vaulted Temple windows towards the busy cityscape in front of them.

"And that is Coruscant. Clubs, restaurants, shopping, incredibly egotistical politicians, useless bureaucrats...it's all out there." He pointed to the nearest public transport pickup location. "Don't go lower than the mid-levels of Coruscant unless you're looking to disappear permanently," he warned. "There are a trillion beings on this planet, and it has a thriving underworld who are as ruthless as any you'll ever come across."

Alanna smiled. "Overwhelming is an understatment. So what are the current issues being debated here?"

Padmé sighed. "Whether the Republic needs its own army. I find it hard to believe that we've come so far away from negotiations with the Separatists that we'd need an army."

Alanna glanced around the building. "And tempers are running high. Who are the Separatists?"

Padmé sighed again. "A group of trade organizations and planets who have decided that the Republic has gotten too bloated and corrupt. Instead of working through the system, they've chosen to leave entirely." She shook her head. "Just take 1,000 years of peace and democracy and throw it away. It's not right and we can't allow it. But we can still come to a peaceful solution. We have the Judicial Department and the Jedi. We don't need soldiers."

Alanna frowned. "A 1,000 years won't be forgotten quickly. Aren't the Jedi almost like soldiers?"

"They're more than soldiers," Padmé said. "They're the living symbol of justice to most of the galaxy. They can only use their powers for knowledge and defense, so any time they're in a conflict, it's because they have to be." She frowned. "With soldiers, it's harder to make that distinction."

"That sounds ... honorable." Alanna glanced around once more. "Was it always like this?"

"This loud and divisive?" Padmé shook her head. "For as long as I've been here, yes. But older Senators tell me that it wasn't always this way."

"Countries change." Alanna said. "I suppose planets and galaxies have too as well." She glanced at her watch and groaned. "I have to be heading back. It was a very pleasant surprise running into you here, ma'am."

"It was lovely to see you, too, Alanna." Padmé smiled. "Tell Anakin I say hello if you happen to think of it?"

With a small wave and a swish of skirts, she disappeared into the Senate chamber.
