Kohala Coast, Hawaii | Morning & Afternoon | Sunday | February 20

As the group from Fandom arrived, they would immediately be met by the bright, warm sunshine of the Big Island. Sparkling blue waters could be seen off in the distance surrounded by the white sands of the beautiful beaches of Hawaii.

The Fairmont Orchid loomed close by, big and bright against the perfect blue sky. The accommodations for the group were spectacular as always. Palms trees decorated the front of the gorgeous hotel, giving it that authentic Hawaiian feel. Maybe there was a lei or two in the future of some of those in the Fandom group? You never know!

The staff of the hotel was there to greet the group, making sure everyone felt welcomed and attended to during their stay. Once the rooms were discovered and the bags were stowed, it was time to start Spring Break!

"I know that being a generally unpleasant human being isn't actually illegal," Karla complained, "but that's just wrong."

On so many different levels!

"It's his decision," Ender said, "I can't blame him for it."

He took a long drink of his cocktail. "This is actually really good."

"You don't hold someone's children over them like that," Karla said, shaking her head slowly. "I will never be Bean's biggest fan--or a fan at all--but Graff owes all of you enough that he should be bending over backwards to help Bean find them, not using it as another bargaining chip."

She took several disgruntled sips of her own drink without tasting them. There were just some political games people shouldn't play.

But ugly thoughts for a pretty day and so she set them aside with difficulty. "It is, isn't it?" she said, pleased. "I think it's my favorite so far. Though I want to try the fizzy purple one next. It looks exciting."

Ender had the feeling that Bean actually stood behind Peter's policies too, at this point, but he hadn't been around to hear him say that. He just sighed, and sipped his drink again, and offered no further comment on the matter. The world back home was always going to be full of strings and bargains and power-plays that the idealists he knew here would never accept.

He had gotten a little jaded, he realised that. Sigh.

"Fizzy purple one it is," he agreed. "Though I'm starting to get the feeling you're just experimenting on me."

And for as dark and ugly as Kaeleeran politics got, they were still very idealistic. Lucivar was proof of that, waiting seventeen hundred years for a Queen he could be proud to serve.

"You like science," Karla pointed out cheerfully. "I'm just helping ease your transition into vacation!"

Ender snorted at her, but obediently emptied his drink. "Get the bad ones out of the way now, then take the most embarrassing ones to Ben?" he guessed.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how many umbrellas and plastic swords and stray bits of fruit I can stick into his glasses before he protests," Karla confided. "And then how many more before he realizes I'm just doing it to mess with him."

"He's pretty dense," Ender slandered, "I'm saying fifteen minutes at least."

"He might catch on if I dress it up right in front of him," Karla mused aloud. "But if I pay the bartender to do it, I bet I can get another ten or so minutes till he figures it out."

"I love it when a plan comes together," Ender said, solemnly. Though he might have been joking mostly to avoid another Spanish Inquisition, who knew? "Devious, miss Di Glacia."

"I bet if I distract him with questions about Dink, I can get him up to a full three-quarters of an hour," Karla said with a wink. "Anything else I should know about him, my willing co-conspirator?"

Ender grinned at her. "I think you've got more than enough material," he said, "Don't get greedy."

"We've met right?" Karla deadpanned, raising a brow. "When am I not greedy? I just usually balance it out with being adorable. And modest."

And she had this bridge, if you were interested...

"Yes," Ender deadpanned back, "I can see that... Weren't we supposed to be ordering something purple?"

"Oooh, right!" Karla waved down another waiter and ordered two of the fizzy purple drinks--and then on a whim pointed to a frothy green drink that was sitting on the bar and ordered two of those as well.

It was best to have a replacement handy when they were done with the first ones.

"I feel like we should be doing this in some kind of order," she said, laughing. "Like following the color spectrum or something, rather than just asking for whatever snags my fancy first."

"But where is the fun in that?"

Ender held up his hand to keep the waiter from leaving.

"Do you have anything in hot pink?"

Let it not be said he wasn't getting in the spirit of things. (Yes, very much trying to avoid Spanish Inquisitioning, but also being somewhat amused despite it all.)

The waiter gave him a startled look, which then turned thoughtful before he nodded once and went to place the orders.

For herself, Karla just sat back, nodding approvingly. This was much more fun than simply drinking milk, even if they were all virgin drinks yet.

"I'm looking forward to getting a bunch of pictures with you, hot pink drink in hand," Karla informed him. "I'll probably need to get someone to Photoshop the lampshade on your head, but the drink itself is an excellent start."

Good luck trying to get Ender to drink anything but virgin drinks, unless you were planning to slip whiskey into his mouth while he was asleep, or something.

Ender shot her a wry look. "Everyone will suspect Photoshop to begin with," he said, "and considering I'm drinking these drinks willingly, I think you might be shooting rather past the target if you think you're going to embarrass me. Save the photos for blushing redheads."

Never tell Ben Ender said that, Karla.

"I will, if only because I know that he's going to put up such a fuss," Karla said with a sigh. "Though I would like to get some pictures of you--of all of us--this vacation. Spring break means the rest of the semester is barreling down on us."

Soon another round of goodbyes would commence. Ugh, horrible thought; one that needed to be banished with something day-glo and fruity.

"Maybe before the end of the week, a few of us should meet up and do something," Ender suggested, "If simply to indulge your photographic pretensions."

Yeah, Ender was trying not to think about D-Day - or 'Tahiri graduates day' - too much, either, but he did not really come equipped with a great capacity for repression.

"If you promise to make time for it, I promise to leave all bright ideas about lamp shades and brightly-colored drinks behind," Karla said, solemnly. Or as solemnly as one could with the last traces of a bright yellow drink decorating her upper lip. "And won't insist on too many pictures of us making silly faces."

Ender held a hand to his heart. "Promise," he said, sincerely. "As long as everyone else has to make more silly faces than me."

"Well, Ben's going to be involved," Karla pointed out. "That automatically puts you behind as far as silly faces go."

That poor boy's ears were probably as red as his hair from the way these two talk about him. It was meant with love, Ben! Love!

"If nothing else, Bobby can always be counted on for silly faces in a pinch as well."

You know. Assuming he was willing to be in any pictures with her. Or for her.

More love than they really wanted! So, you know, win?

"You make a very good point," Ender said, and grabbed his purple drink once it arrived. "I think that means we have a deal."

See, and Ender could probably explain to Ben that the trick to avoiding people trying to embarrass him was to stop responding to the embarrassment, but...

...But it was so much more fun this way. Admit it, Ender, it was.

Karla held up her drink to him. "A deal," she said.
