Backpacking trip: Santa Cruz, Wednesday

It's cooler and cloudier out, today, but no less gorgeous. One might start to suspect that bad weather didn't exist in this town.

Priestly would argue that of course there was, this was just a normal place, you know? But what did Priestly know?

Santa Cruz Hostel.

Someone made crumpets for breakfast. And they're willing to share.

Jack made a stand in the kitchen, frying up some chicken and potatoes; as usual, he made too much.

"Ow! Hot!" he exclaimed, switching the pan to a different burner.

It's maybe not quite sunbathing weather, but there's still windsurfing and tidal pools.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Roller coasters and spinny rides.

Tony turned 19 today. Back home, he could've gone to a bar for his first legal drink. Out here, he'd have to make do with roller coasters, amazing weather and junk food.

It'd do.

"Time to get the birthday boy more ice cream," Dinah sang out.

"Are you buying? I don't think there's a limit on how much ice cream I can eat," Tony said.

"Let's fine out," Dinah teased. "I bet they'll give us more if we tell them it's your birthday. Or if I flirt with the ice cream guy... or if you do!"

"Awesome," Tony said. "And then we hit the roller coaster again." He paused. "I wonder if we should reverse those?"

"...yeah, pretty sure we should, if we want to go on more than once," Dinah admitted. "Aaaand you should open your prezzie."

Surprise! Big crumply crinkly wrapped-up package!

"An HDTV? You shouldn't have," Tony grinned, accepting the package.

Tony snorted. "For this, I'm buying you fishnets," he said, but he was grinning. "Thanks." He hugged her.

"Pffttt," Dinah said, then grinned, hugging him back hard. "Welcome! And it's white. Rare. Ha."

Santa Cruz Harbor. Wednesday means it's boat race day, and all the locals with boats are out en masse to see who's got the fastest ship. Watch them sail against the sunset from any number of beaches and restaurants.

Priestly's in for a quick shift in the morning, but then he's dragging Jen out and leaving Trucker all by his lonesome for the afternoon.

Zo's almost a little spooky, sometimes, but she's very friendly.

Be sure to check out the downtown farmer's market this afternoon -- there's nothing like a meal made from the freshest possible ingredients.

I'm drowning in the UK budget.
