Backpacking Trip: Ancient Greece, Monday

It was another gorgeous day in Middle-Earth Narnia New Zealand Greece, all sunshine and clear skies and slightly warm, if temperate and breezy, weather.

Neither the Amazon nor centaur settlements were particularly given to commercial pursuits, but residents of both villages were willing to escort anyone who wanted to go to the nearby village of Targopolis, where there was a bustling marketplace for all your shopping needs. Quite well-stocked for a remote village of its time, really.

Amazon Village

While the Amazons themselves don't take too kindly to idleness, they'll let their visitors slide.

Centaur Settlement

Things are busy over here, too, but they won't look at you too severely if you choose to relax.

Targopolis: Marketplace

The center square of the village is crowded with crude wooden stalls hung with various patterns of brightly-colored cloth, merchants of every age and gender hawking their wares; some of them are engaging in not-so-friendly banter with each other across the road. Purely in the spirit of healthy business competition, of course.

Be prepared to haggle.

Food Stalls

You might be surprised at the variety of foods to be found here: no hot dogs or ice cream, of course, but there are sausages and meat rolls, roasted fowl, both dried and fresh fish . . .

Fruits and vegetables too. Yes, among the kinds of produce available are watermelons, tomatoes, and potatoes.

. . . no. Seriously. Nobody here thinks that's weird.

Clothing Stalls

There's all sorts of clothing to be found here: breeches and trousers of various cuts, tunics, dresses, scarves, skirts, vests -- even a haberdashery or two of sorts. You won't find a terribly wide variety of luxurious materials here, and what there will be in the way of silks and fancy embroidery will be quite pricey, but as long as you're not going for anything really fancy there's a wide selection.

Weapons/Armor Stalls

Mostly knives, swords, and bows of various, sometimes impractical, and sometimes outright anachronistic design, but you might find a few interesting things among the merchants' wares if you poke through enough. Armor is mostly leather with varying degrees of metal studding and spikes attached, with the occasional small buckler or shield.

Miscellaneous Stalls

Jewelry, trinkets, assorted knick-knacks, scrolls, Hercules and Xena action figures made by the renowned toymaker Senticles . . .

There's no Xena-themed merchandise other than that, though. Salmoneus tried -- trademarks might not exist yet, but a glare and significant threat from Xena do the trick just fine.

The name "Targopolis" comes from me looking around my desk and noticing the Targus logo on my mouse. This is carrying on a fine Xena writers' tradition (per Steven L. Sears) of naming stuff by looking around the room until you notice something that strikes your fancy. Feel free to mod the wares in the marketplace within reason, by which I mean "stuff you might find at a Renaissance Faire because nobody cares about historical accuracy in the Xenaverse."
