//Yer figure I'd get along any differently out there than I do here?//

By way of demonstrating what he was talking about, Jono was nodding in the direction that Hurley had been sitting in, now.

"I think no one would even look at you twice," Ben said honestly. "There are thousands of species at home. It's incredibly rude to stare."

//I wish starin' was th'worst of it.// Jono's gaze flicked upward momentarily, almost wistfully, then. //That might be why I decided to stay, when I found myself on the island. The staring, I can handle, mate. And the stupid questions.//

Once again with the pointed glower at where Hurley had been sitting. Plonker.

//I'd like to see where yer from sometime, perhaps. I'd even do my best to not look too obviously like a dazed interplanetary tourist.//

"And I'm sure my dad would love to meet you," Ben replied with a smile. "Things were crazy last weekend or I would've found you."

//I think it was a crazy weekend all around, mate. I spent it babysitting a classmate from my last school, myself.// Jono looked vaguely amused at that. //I'm sure there'll be other chances. Less hectic ones, at least.//

Ben nodded. "Once my cousin graduates, the drama of the weekend should go down by a factor of ten."

//That bad, is it?// Jono gave Ben a sympathetic look. //There's never anything like extended family to complicate things entirely too much for comfort, is there?//

"She's from fifteen years behind me," Ben said, "and some fairly important things have changed."

//Ah,// Jono mused, nodding slightly. //Time differences, again. This island seems like it's been infested with people from every corner of my own world's timeline, so I can at least appreciate that much, mate.//

Ben nodded, then ran his hand through his hair. "Any of 'em turn evil?"

//None that I'm painfully aware of, yet, but there are a few who are from my own future.//

Jono would be very, very upset when he learned that Iron Man was responsible for passing the act that required the systematic registration of every super-powered individual, with severe reciprocations for those who resisted.

//The headmistress of my last school is a student here, though. And at least a year youger'n I am. Bloody weird, that.//

Ben laughed. "That is," he agreed. "My grandfather's here, and he's supposed to be dead."

Jono shook his head, amused.

//Yer know, I haven't been a member of the 'entirely too bloody weird' club for long, but if there's one thing I've learned since joining, it's that they're never dead when yer bloody near positive that they are. Unless they are.//

Which made no sense at all, but then, neither did most things.

"Oh, he's totally dead at home," Ben said. "For, like, a hundred years. He just didn't follow the rules in his reality. Which, knowing Granddad now, makes a lot of sense. He's not exactly a rule follower if it doesn't suit him."

//Oh, this is an alternate reality thing, on top of all of that.// Jono nodded faintly. //I've seen a bit of that, as well. People from my world, who are just... different, in one way or another.//

"More heads different or other memories different?" Ben asked.

//Other memories,// Jono replied, chuckling faintly as he gave his head a shake. //Trust me, mate, if it was a matter of more heads, I probably wouldn't look twice, either.//

Well, maybe twice.

"Sounds like home, then," Ben said with a grin. "Well, not that we grow heads, but evil clones aren't completely out of the realm of possibility."

//I can't say I've met any of those, yet,// Jono mused, //but yer get one hell of a variety when yer version of Earth comes with people with powers that manifest when they hit puberty.//

Or several years after the fact, when least expected. Stupid powers.

Ben smiled. "Oh, my dad's still picking up new tricks and he's been a Jedi for forty years."

Jono's expression went a little wry.

//Most of us just get th'one trick. A bloke I know back at my last school has six extra feet of prehensile grey skin.//

"That's...not that handy," Ben said diplomatically.

//Sometimes, what manifests isn't,// Jono agreed. //I don't think Angelo thinks too highly of what he got stuck with, either. But now and again, it has its uses. And there are worse things to be stuck with.//

He was pretty sure.

"Like painting the future or something?" Ben said, pulling an idea out of thin air.

//Angelo sometimes uses his power for wrappin' around the arms and legs of an opponent wot's tryin' to kill him,// Jono replied, shrugging. //I'm certain he'll come up with better, mind yer.//

... Though now Jonothon was kind of amused by the notion of seeing Angelo trying to paint furniture using his skin.

//There are people who are less lucky. Other physical mutations, the like of which doesn't let 'em walk around in public without bein' spat on. Or worse. If yer don't get good at hidin' what yer are, then yer better get good at just hidin'.//
