Arrakis - The Funeral Plain - Tuesday Evening

It was still hot in the early evening, one of the two moons was rising over the mountain range when Ghanima took them out of Tabr and into the the vast plains of the Deep Desert

One of Ghanima's Fedaykin bodyguards went to set the thumper just south of their position as she went over how to mount and ride the worm using the maker hooks, demonstrating slowly how to use them to catch hold of the giant creatures.

The thumper underscored her words with a steady thump/whomp, thump/whomp as they summoned their ride.

It probably didn't help to see Merlin's idiotic smile upon his arrival. "Arthur, look," He said, sticking close for balance and pointing out at the moonlight on the sand.

"I'm looking," Arthur said, casting a look at that way and finding... "Ah. You seem to have found some sand."

Merlin just rolled his eyes. "You're not looking."

"At the sand?" Arthur asked him, incredulously. "I think I've seen plenty."

Leaning to see what Arthur was seeing, Merlin pointed toward the horizon. "Just look."

The moons and the sand and the darkness.

Wasn't terrifying in the slightest, really.

"I'm looking," he countered.

"But you're not seeing what I am," Merlin countered. "It's beautiful."

"It's sand."

Rather awe-inspiring sand, but sand, none the less.

He took a deep breath.

"The same way home is just trees."

"And water," Arthur argued, "Grass, creatures, and cities. Although you have to appreciate they've managed to survive out here."

"Something to remember when we go home," Merlin suggested.

"That we have water, grass and cities?" Arthur asked, shooting him a glance that was about 75% why-yes-I'm-misunderstanding-on-purpose.

Probably a testament to the idea that he was starting to relax.

"Of course," Merlin replied dryly. Even though he was still smiling.

"So tell me," he said, "Seen any more sand lately?"

"I can't tell, have you?"

"There's some to the left," Arthur said, peering that way, "And some to the right. And why look, behind us, it's more sand."

"Nothing in front?" Merlin prompted easily.

"I can't tell," Arthur said, more than happy to see Merlin setting up the joke for him, "It got lost in all the sand."

It was a very easy joke. So, really, he shouldn't feel so impressed.

Snorting, Merlin stayed where he was, shoulder touching Arthur's. "You ought to bring some home. A souvenir."

Arthur 'Cheap Shot' Pendragon, make an easy joke? Say it's not so.

"That'll be something to present to my father," Arthur snorted. "From my travels, I've brought you a handful of sand, a giant chicken, and a scroll that turns you into a newt."

"Perhaps not for your father," Merlin granted him. "Just for you. To remember these things by."

"That's very sentimental of you..."

"That's not always a bad thing."

"If you must be such a girl about it," Arthur granted, graciously. "You can take some. It won't stand out in your room, after all."

"I'll hold onto it for you."
