The Crown Princess - Monday [Ship/Princess Cays, Bahamas]

Early in the morning, the cruise director came over the loudspeaker announcing the port of the day and some on-boat activities of interest. Those paying attention would learn that from 9am until 5pm, the Crown Princess would be docked in the lovely Princess Cays, Bahamas where guests were welcome to participate in glass-bottom boat, snorkeling, or beach excursions for a portion of the day. Adults were encouraged toward the Sanctuary on the Sun Deck for a more private way to relax away from the teens.

[OOC: The Princess Bridge Cam is fantastic. Cabins Post | Star Deck | Sun Deck | Promenade Deck | Cays Cruise | Snorkeling | Beach]

He leaned in to hug her lightly. "Lying can create more problem than it solves. What did they say?"

Dinah leaned against him, delighted and yeah, a little pink again, but not too bad. "They said they'd trust me that I was getting an education out of Fandom that I couldn't get in New Gotham, that it wasn't more dangerous than I could handle, and that I wouldn't get in too much trouble." She pulled back and grinned. "Plus I could tell people more about home, if I really wanted to."

"That's a good thing." He leaned back on the sand. "You have the choice, then."

"Yup." Dinah grinned at him, turning over her now-semi-secret identity, and decided it belonged to another day. "Plus I don't have to give Geoffrey a nervous breakdown by quitting the play. That would be a tragedy."

Laughing, Leto replied: "Because that would be the worst thing to happen. How do you find your part in the play?"

"I love it, but it is hard. You saw me on Tuesday." Dinah flopped back on the sand dramatically. "I brought my script to practice memorizing more of those speeches. But it's fun to play the king, even though I don't get half of the motivations yet." She turned her head to look at him. "How do you like being a common soldier?"

He grinned. "Oh, it's quite enjoyable, and not nearly as many lines to memorize as you have." He added: "What motivations don't you understand?"

Dinah thought about the play, and finally said, "How, when it looks like they are going to lose, Harry can keep going with the fight. I mean. If it were just him, I'd get it. But it's not, it's him and all the guys he brought with him. Just because they win in the end, it doesn't... I don't know. Doesn't seem to justify it."

Leto looked at her. "What would you have done?"

"Been a lot more sure before I took other people into a fight." Dinah shook her head. "About the enemy numbers, and the justification for the battle-- Harry worries about that too." She frowned. "Or just gone myself. A duel, or something."

Yeeeeah, Helena has rubbed off on her.

"But he had made a decision and must finish what he had started," Leto replied, smiling. "He couldn't have gone by himself. A king is a leader, and a leader is never on his own."

"I am so glad I'm not really a leader. Not yet, anyway." Maybe not ever. She tilted her head to study Leto. "Would you have done that?"

Interesting question. "I... don't know. Quite possibly, but I might look for other options." He looked out across the sea, his father's memories returning to him. Sixty billion people had lost their lives in the Jihad, because one man's prescient vision had shown him that the alternative would have been worse.

"But then, even if you know the future, the outcome can be unclear."

"And whether it was worth it." Dinah thought of the dreams she had sometimes. Knowing what had happened to Barbara and Helena before she ever met them in person should have discouraged her from looking for them, but it had had the opposite effect. Maybe you just had to be mad to try to change things.

She looked at Leto. Even on a small scale, knowing the ending didn't mean you didn't try to change it. She shook her head. "How was your week, while I was gone?"

He raised an eyebrow at the change of subject. "Quiet." Apart from half the school being cranky.

Dinah dimpled at him. And not, not, profoundly not about to get into the week some people had with him. "I heard about the fire alarm. I'm not sure if I'm sorry I missed the pajama fashion show and whining session or not."

"Ah, that. It took us a while to understand the purpose of the alarm." Enough time to get properly dressed. "Had there been an invasion of some kind it would have been suicidal to gather in front of the building like that."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Suicidal for who? The invaders?" Dinah teased. "We've got some heavy hitters at our school." More seriously, she said, "The whole point is to know how to get out of the building and how long it takes. And that you can't slow down. Not to mention alternate routes out. I'm using the window."

"How should I have known that it was a fire alarm?" Leto told her with a shrug.

"We have people responsible for that sort of thing." He smiled at Dinah. "But yes, it was the excitement of the week."

He had been concerned for Alice though, knowing she might not want to be reminded of fires.

"Hunh." Fires on Arrakis were probably put out with sand, too. Different all around. "Anyway. Now we're here, and we have a ton of things to do-- are you up for a tour on one of the islands this week? Not just you and me, but whoever's around."
