The Crown Princess - Monday [Ship/Princess Cays, Bahamas]

Early in the morning, the cruise director came over the loudspeaker announcing the port of the day and some on-boat activities of interest. Those paying attention would learn that from 9am until 5pm, the Crown Princess would be docked in the lovely Princess Cays, Bahamas where guests were welcome to participate in glass-bottom boat, snorkeling, or beach excursions for a portion of the day. Adults were encouraged toward the Sanctuary on the Sun Deck for a more private way to relax away from the teens.

"I'm absolutely terrified of your fish," Ender said, "So it might work."

"They are very terrifying," Ben agreed. "It's like no one had ever said hello to them or something."

"King of the Fish," he said, slipping his goggles up onto his forehead. His eyes stung a little. "I think you've found your Jedi niche."

"Too bad we're not allowed to run things," Ben said with a wry smile. "Jacen's just the last in a long line of reasons why."

"It's usually a good idea not to let the soldiers rule," Ender just said, and now he was serious.

Ben was so very bad at the concept of "vacation". "Which is why a government being run by a fallen Jedi and a current admiral is doing so very badly," he commented.

"Military leaders think in terms of power, of being able to beat the other guy," Ender said, tilting his head. "Political leaders think about power in terms of the right words at the right time."

"And what do you think Jedi think of?" Ben asked, curious.

"Moral superiority," he said, steadily.

Ben chewed at his lower lip. "Which I suck at," he said.

"You're half a soldier," Ender pointed out, paddling, "I don't think you've figured out the other half yet."

"And other half cop," Ben said. "I should at least be a little better than I am. I hate not being able to trust my instincts completely."

"You haven't exactly been doing a lot of policing," Ender observed, "You're not going to learn by sitting around."

Ben thought about it. "Not that GAG was really doing a lot of investigating," he said eventually. "A lot of spying, a bit of assassination..."

"That's not policework," Ender said, "It's playing underground soldiers."

"It's what's making the guys who'd started out as cops twitchy," Ben agreed. "Mixing intelligence guys with real police is just not working."

"And if it's not working," Ender said, paddling a little harder to stay up, "Then you have to ask yourself what your half is. Morally, not metaphysically."

He slipped his goggles back over his eyes.
