The Crown Princess - Monday [Cabins and Lido Deck]

It was a beautiful day in the Caribbean! The sun was bright in the cloudless sky, casting no shadows on the open section of the Lido deck: Sunbathers beware. Luckily, the Horizon Court offered umbrellas at some tables for the sun shy.

Near the pools were large lettered signs discouraging guests from diving or jumping into the water due to the lack of depth.

He shouldn't have been surprised to find Jaina still in the cabin when he returned from the snorkeling excursion.

John tossed his things on the desk and tried not to give her a look.

She didn't even need to see the look. She knew it was there. "Things still have to get done," she said matter-of-factly.

She probably heard his eyes roll, too. "They do. Look, I accomplished a tan today."

"That's never exactly been a problem for you," she said, looking up. Not that she hated it, of course.

"Yeah, but it's more fun when I don't have to beg people to put lotion on my back," he told her.

"Couldn't ask Gavin to do it?" she teased, setting her datapad down like a good girl.

"Like I said, there was begging involved," John replied.

She smiled a little. "I meant to make it out there," she said apologetically. "I would have helped, no begging required."

"No big deal, Gavin was great even though he does taste a little more like sand than expected. I mean, there's being from the desert and then there's being part of the desert," John said.

Yes, that would be staring. And an "Um?"

"What? I was making the best of it," John shrugged, turning away so she wouldn't see him smother his snicker. Hey, someone was going to have fun on this trip, dammit.

"Funny," she said dryly, and more sincerely, "Glad you had fun."

"First make sure Gavin didn't write anything jackassy on my back with the lotion," he said, stripping off his shirt. "Then I'll decide if it was fun."

"Just a 'kick me'," she said before she even looked.

"Oh, well that's better than expected," John shrugged. "How's your stuff going?"

"The usual, if there is such a thing." She was actually wondering if she hadn't made the wrong decision by not going home, but it was too late now. "It's not really vacation talk."

Of course it wasn't. "Well, you enjoy that." John kicked off his flip flops and perched on the side of the bed. "Will it bug you if I take a nap here?"

She shook her head. "I can find somewhere to go if I need to make any calls," she assured him. "No problem."

He raised an eyebrow. "Jaina."

His voice had a pleading tone.

"What?" she asked, honestly not sure why she was getting that tone.

John was done playing games. "You don't have to go anywhere. Can't you just be on vacation?"

"No," Jaina replied. "I'm not at home, I didn't go home, I still have things I've got to do. You know that."

"Well, why didn't you go home when you're making it pretty obvious you'd rather be there than here?" John asked bluntly.

"I don't know," she admitted. "It isn't that I don't want to be here, I just have to balance. And I'm doing my best on day two."

"Right, that's why you haven't left the room today," he said. "I know your work is important, but we have what? Eight weeks?"
