fh_trips | Voavah Island, the Maldives [Wednesday Morning/Afternoon]

Our days will revolve around the multi-story Beach House--where the students are staying--and the adjacent powder-white sands, crystal lagoon and vibrant reef, which are all exemplary even by the Maldives' standards. Laze in the shady open-air lounge. Dive into the pristine waters. Work out in the gym. Cool down in the library. Go for a beach wander across the five-acre island.

Okay, the rooms went a little funky overnight.

After entirely too much time, the hangover on Henry abated enough to send him stumbling back upstairs to his room.

Unfortunately, the hangover had not abated enough to prepare him for the sight of the room as he opened it.

"...Is that a lizard or am I drunk again?"

"A dinosaur, I believe," Belle said. "It was just here when I awoke!"

Henry wasn't sure what a dinosaur was, but that wasn't the most pressing question at the moment. "... D'you think someone broke in here and just moved it in here?" he said. And then-- "Are you all right?"

"I think perhaps this island was infected by our island," Belle said. "I hope I would have noticed people in here..."

But maybe not! She'd been extremely unobservant this week for totally unknowable reasons.

She smiled then. "I'm quite all right, but thank you."

Henry nodded. "Just making certain," he said. "You seem nice, you shouldn't have to deal with random lizard-burglars."

"I appreciate that!" Belle smiled wider.

"I hope you don't have to deal with any either. Or anything else too sinister."

Like the ugliest clothes and swimwear in the world?

Henry's wardrobe, as it was, already consisted mostly of Shenanigans t-shirts. The Hawaiian shirt with all the ducks on it he'd woken up in in the lounge that morning barely even registered.

"Well, Flint says the sharks are further out," he offered. "But he does seem concerned about spiders for some reason."

Belle's own shirt was a variety of eye-searing shades of yellow flowers that flattered no one.

"He may not be the most trustworthy source of information," she mused. "He once told me he was a dragon."

This still had not been proven to be false.

Henry frowned. "He did?" he said. "Can't say I've ever met a dragon before, and I doubt I have yet. He's a bit stabby, but he's all right."

There's a morning breakfast buffet set up around the pool and a fleet of chefs eager to assist you in whatever food you're interested in having for lunch. You can even order up to your suites, or get the chefs to teach a cooking class!

It was really hard to try and stay in your room when there were two kids who thought your swimwear was hilarious but also wouldn't stop asking to go to the pool. At least Jaina could get coffee and the pastries they insisted on but didn't eat while they played around, and her attire was at least appropriate for the setting.

She quickly learned that crossing your legs to try and hide the crotch cow actually made it worse.

Henry's head hurt.

Initially, that had been because of the hangover, of course. But secondary was the headache he'd procured when he'd attempted to sit up and discovered - belated - that he'd passed out under a chair in the lounge last night.

So now his head hurt. He was trying to sort through vague and distorted memories of drinking and singing last night - of a pale face and a nasal voice and a Harley dragging him off the boat and across the sand and into the house. He was not really getting anywhere with it.

"I think I'm just staying put for now," he told the bottom of the chair as he stared up at it.

He'd notice the Hawaiian shirt and trunks later, no doubt.

At least you got trunks, Henry. Flint had not been so lucky.

"Feel free," said a very dry English voice.

Henry squinted harder. "Flint?" he called. "Is that you?"

"Unfortunately," Flint said. "Good morning."

"Is it?" Henry said. "I'm a bit worried about comin' out from under here, I feel like I was kicked by a horse."

"I would stay there," Flint said, "but when people come from breakfast, it will get very loud."

Henry let out a long, pitiful sigh. "Why couldn't Harley have just left me in a shrub or something?"

"The spiders, probably," Flint said, completely making that up.

"Why would I care about spiders?" Henry asked. "They're spiders."

"I think it depends how far into drink you were," Flint said. "I've seen men cry."

He didn't sound at all impressed by those men, but.

It was sad that the face Henry was pulling was lost underneath the chair. "Grown men crying about spiders?" he said. "Drunken spiders?"

Okay, he was quite hungover and he couldn't hear so good down there.

"Well, they cried when the spiders ran across their faces while they laid on the ground," Flint said.

Henry tried to do the math on that. It was not mathing.

"Wait, what was happening to these men?"

"They fell into a bush and had spiders run across their faces," Flint said with a laugh. "And so I pointed and mocked."

It's quite pretty, in spite of the weird.

Of course you want to go to the beach. It's all around you! Resident dolphins, turtles and rays visit Voavah’s lagoon daily, while green and hawksbill turtles nest nearby. There's a yoga class at sunrise (and then again at noon because vacation), but you can just grab a towel (and sunscreen) and enjoy the water all day. Someone will even bring you food!

Cal and the sun didn't always get along, but how could he say no to the possibility of seeing turtles and dolphins? BD-1 was being great about reminding him to re-apply his sunscreen every two hours, so Cal was going to soak up the beach vibes for as long as he could.

After waking up in their newly decorated room, Arden couldn't even protest much when she saw the bathing suit that had been given to? inflicted upon? her. She had just decided that if this was the worst and weirdest thing, she could grit her teeth and deal.

And, honestly, walks on the beach in the Maldives with two of her favorite people? Helped.

Cal's shorts were certainly vibrant but he couldn't complain--mostly because his brain was short on words while Arden was in sight.

"I should have known the island's weird stuff would follow us here, but I didn't actually consider it," he said. "It's too bad we didn't end up dressed for jetblading."

Yes, that was definitely a disappointment for all of them, obviously.

"I might try to do it anyway," Arden admitted, grinning up at him. "It looks like flying! But on water!"

And you knew how she felt about flying, Cal!

"But for now..." She reached for his hand. "Nowhere else I'd rather be."

If holding Arden's hand ever got old, Cal was pretty sure there would be something seriously wrong with him. He gave her hand a squeeze as he grinned at her. "It does look like fun. Did you have fun with the sharks? I can't believe you did the crazy thing and I took pictures."

"It was so cool!" Arden gushed. "They were so big, and there was definitely a part of my brain that was like, 'Girl, you know you're prey-shaped, right?' the whole time, but that's what made it exhilarating! Did you get some good pics?"

"Yeah. You wouldn't think a person could need that many pictures of pancake fish, but the mantas were so cute," Cal said. "For creatures without faces, I mean. I feel like sharks are also pretty cool-looking when they're not actively trying to eat people."

Well, at least Steve's eye-searing trunks matched the Vegas nightmare he'd woken up in? Steve could appreciate a theme.

This seems safe.

Sure, Sabine didn't love the water. And she did love wearing this thing when she wasn't even American and didn't know the guy on it. But she also missed flying around on a jetpack, and that won out.

She'd deal with the water and not look down at herself.

Anakin (and his amazing new shirt) had borrowed Jaina's sons, and now they were all in water jet pack...things.

It was a life lesson for later. Jedi ended up in ridiculous situations.

Hop on a dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat) to neighbouring Kamadhoo for an insight into local island life. After a warm welcome with coconuts and traditional boduberu dance, explore the streets, learn about ancient folklore and sample Maldivian hedhikaa snacks.

There was a very displeased Liliana stealing the boat today. Her room had been transformed in some kind of Christmas nightmarescape, which was bad, but what was worse? whatever the fuck this was.

A one piece? In these colors? How did it manage to be colorful and drab? "Even the women last night got to have color," she muttered.

Ugh, and the material was cheap, too.
