Travis would actually be a bit disappointed to miss the shenanigans this week, if he'd had any idea by this point what day it was up on the surface. Down in the cavern, it was as uniformly dark and dank and cool as it had been since he and Probie had fallen in.

Well. At least he didn't have to deal with the heat wave?

He'd given up on the ladder truck. And climbing the walls. And amping up his radio's signal to try to reach anyone up on the surface and let them know where he was. He was sprawled out against the side of the overturned desk, staring moodily at the little emergency lantern he was using for light, and generally being nearly as big a sad useless lump as he'd been after his husband had died four years ago.

He'd get back to being useful in awhile. Sometimes you just had to have a Sad Lump Day.

"No, I just figured I'd sit here and slowly go insane and die." Travis. The sarcasm was not entirely called for. "Yes, of course I tried to get out, there is no out."

"There's always an out, or there wouldn't be an in," Alexis pointed out, like a weirdo whose first rodeo this was not. "Unless you found like, a bunch of old skeletons in here, then I'd be a little nervous."

"Only things down here are . . . well, the fire station," Travis said. "And a lot of rocks. And now you guys." He jerked his thumb at the ladder truck again. "Though maybe now we have enough people to tip that sucker over and try the ladder?"

"Maybe. Is it longer than the fire pole?" Alexis wondered.

“I haven’t tried it yet,” Travis admitted. “But the manual says it’s a full length fire ladder. So — yes. By a lot.”

But not 999 feet a lot.

"Hmm. I'm actually more confident in shimmying up a pole- it was for fitness- but a ladder could work," she said.

“A ladder would be much easier — I’m sorry but what are you wearing?”

Travis was judging your patriotic pun t-shirt hard, Alexis. He hadn’t gotten to properly judge anyone in days.

"A shirt from the summer event, thank you," she said, pretty judgey at his judging.

Surely she wouldn't miss the chance to wear this in Miami over the Fourth, right?
