Hope you were done enjoying all that rustic, traditional nature stuff - your last hotel is the luxurious JR Tower Hotel Nikko in Sapporo, which towers above the city and features, besides the usual hot spring resort, a great introduction to Hokkaido cuisine in its several restaurants.

The Mikuni is Nikko's French restaurant, run by Japan's premier French-style chef. Sit down, enjoy some classic French dishes, and dig into the restaurant's reserve of 1.000 bottles of French wine.

The hotel's buffet restaurant. Here you'll find a spread of Western cuisine, and all the cocktails you're going to want for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

As a big breakfast guy (mebbe you'd noticed), Wayne liked the mornings when he could enjoy his most important meal of the day without worrying about getting to a train the most, and, since this was the last one for the trip, he was definitely making the most of it before seeing what all he could squeeze into this final day.

Nikko's classic Japanese restaurant, Tancho is a stylish place using only the freshest of ingredients from Hokkaido. If you're thirsty, try the restaurant's broad assortment of sakes.

Hokkaido Shrine

This beautiful shinto shrine was chosen by Emperor Meiji as a home to Okunitama, Onamuchi, and Sukunahikona, the gods that watched over the reclamation of Hokkaido. Explore the temple grounds all you wish, but remember: the center path is for the gods, not for you.

Was Shunsui there to show his respect to other kami and meditate on his current bout of mingling with mortals in this particular realm? Or was he merely sneaking in a nap after another long night on the town?

It was, really, anyone's guess.

Stark had enjoyed visiting the temples and shrines on this trip. They weren't his gods, of course, and not ones he would have had any connection to but these were beautiful places and he found them calming.

Maruyama Zoo

Maruyama Zoo is one of the biggest zoos in the country, and famously surrounded by nature. The zoo tries to recreate the animals' natural habitats. Come look at the polar bears!

Troy was definitely pumped to spend his day at the zoo, even if it was a little disappointing to find out that animals in Japan were pretty much the same as animals in any other zoo he'd been to. Still! He loved him some cute animals, and it didn't seem like a bad way to spend the day.

Belle had never been to a zoo before but there seemed no downside to visiting cute animals on the last day of the trip. She might even end up with a red panda plushie to join the plushies from the other night of Buying Adorable Things.

For now she was happily walking around the zoo and admiring every animal she saw.

Art Park

This park features more than 70 sculptures and is home to the Sapporo Art Museum. It's snowing a bit right now, so make sure you get some snowshoes at the reception before you go in. And if you're feeling a little more hands-on, the Craft Studio is open, where you can take classes in woodworking, pottery, glassblowing and textile-dyeing.

Climb Moiwayama

Done with the city? Sapporo's best views don't come from any tower, but from nearby Moiwa Mountain. Take a cable car to the top and enjoy your full panoramic view of the city.

While an art park definitely had its appeals, Astrid had spent a lot of time in museums and looking at various man-made art; she could probably stand to use this day to appreciate some of the art created by the hands of nature...

...and man, because of the view of the city. But, either way, she decided to take in the views from above, sketchbook in hand, of course, to just enjoy the sights. The juxtoposition of nature and the city was particularly nice up here, she felt.

Visit Kaitaku-mura

This historic part of Sapporo functions as something of an open air museum in the suburbs of town. If you're curious how the locals lived in the 19th century, here's your chance.

It was always a bit interesting to Amaya, how a lot of these 'historical villages' in these places they went to still seemed significantly more advanced, technologically, than where she was originally coming from. But, in a way, that almost made a lot of it all that much more intriguing to her. Although she was getting a pretty solid grip on modernity by now, these places provided an excellent view into the middle ground, into how she might impliment some ideas if she ever did decide to go back.
