Hotel Dann Carlton Quito, Sunday, October 13, 2019 [Quito, Ecuador]

After a slight misadventure through the portals that involved a very surprised Beaker, a show full of Muppets, and Anakin being shot from a cannon (he's fine, but his hair is ruined), the Fandomites arrived in Quito, Ecuador in the late afternoon, which was not enough time to go very far in their explorations, but enough to hit the Parque La Carolina, a 165.5 acre park in the center of Quito and a five minute walk from their hotel, the Dann Carlton Quito. Despite its location near the equator, the temperatures are very fall-like today, hovering around 72F (22C) until it cooled down even further when the sun went down at 6.

RESTAURANTS 10/13

There are a few to choose from in the hotel: The Ópera Restaurant in the lobby offering a Mediterranean menu from noon to 10pm, The Luxemburgo Cafe (which will also host the breakfast buffet) is open tonight for a buffet, the Europa Cafe is open until 9 if you're just feeling like a sandwich or a pastry, and the Liverpool Bar has snacks to go with all of the booze they serve.

Europa Cafe

Shuri was practicing her Spanish and so while she hadn't quite gotten the coffee she'd been asking for, the giant cupcake was more than making up for it.

Now, why wasn't Wayne at all surprised to come across Shuri somewhere where she could get coffee?

And since he'd been practicing his Spanish, too, he approached with a stolid, "Shuri, como estahhs eh-ora?" and just as much of his persistent rural drawl as you'd expect.

Shuri's face lit up. "Muy bien," she said in a much better accent (her teachers were extremely picky). "Como esta tu habitacion?"

"Oh," said Wayne, surprising no one, "no es tan malo."

Then he had to squint a little, because he's mostly just been trying to pick up on it that day, and had to think quite a bit on how to say what he was thinking to say next. He considered just switching back to English, but, no, he had it pretty good, he thought.

"Pu-edo...ten-ear un ah...see-en-toe?"

His teachers weren't picky at all about accent, obviousleh, but, then again...his teachers were himself.

"Well, I should hope so," Wayne said, pulling out a chair, having himself a sit. "When they got it pretty much growing right in the back yard."

Shuri reached for her phone. "There's a coffee tasting in Old Quito," she found after a quick search. "Want to try it out tomorrow after the touring?"

"I'd have a coffee tasting," Wayne decided with a nod. "Who needs sleep, anyway?"

Honestleh, he probably wasn't going to be getting much of his beer drinking in, might as well drink something. Especially if that drinking involved Shuri probably bein' all cute about coffee.

"We're only here a week, it would be wasted sleeping," Shuri said, laughing.

"We'll get plenty of it when we're dead," Wayne agreed, although he'd be just as likely to turn right around and go into a firm diatribe about the importance of a solid eight hours. "Anything in particular yer looking forward to gettin' out of this one, Shuri?"

"I've never been anywhere," Shuri said, "but the Galapagos Islands? All of those fun, weird animals? I'm excited."

Luxemburgo Cafe

Keyleth ended up at the dinner buffet after getting things squared away in her room -- which hadn't taken too long, considering she really hadn't brought much except what would fit in her little backpack.

She'd carefully arranged her hair to cover the tips of her ears, but she still felt so awkward and weird without her circlet on.

She would totally blame her spilled salad plate on that if asked, but she hoped nobody was going to ask.

Trevor shot her a look, then turned his attention around the room to see if there was anything around that could make her like that.

He was settling on this just being a Keyleth thing, but should probably do something like check on it.

"Are you alright?"

"Fine!" Keyleth exclaimed so immediately it had to be reflex. "I'm just fine."

Yeah, the higher, almost squeaky pitch of your voice there really sold the claim, Keyleth.

She sighed. "I just tripped, that's all." Over her own foot. Which was nothing new.

Yeah, that did track, honestly. Which was why Trevor sort of slowly nodded like he was adding it to the list of Weird Shit About Keyleth.

"You look weird." Wow, Trevor. Wow. "The horns not being there."

"They're antlers, not horns," Keyleth objected, but faintly. "And I know. I feel weird without them. I think maybe my balance is all thrown off."

Also her poor charisma stat was all unbuffed now.

"Something's definitely off," he agreed. "Maybe we can find you a hat."

Just a normal hat with no buffs. Gross.

And no distinctive character, either! Anyway, Ecuador was likely not the best place to find one of those cheesy moose-antler hats.

. . . those probably gave you a negative Charisma modifier, actually.

"That might not be a bad idea, actually," Keyleth conceded. "It'll help me keep my ears hidden, at least. I've already had one person staring at me over the soup bar as it is."

Trevor looked around the room for who he needed to single out for being an asshole to. Because he'd do it. Wasn't even a hardship to do it!

No, that would totally be more Beau's thing, for multiple reasons.

Keyleth was just looking quizzically at Trevor now.

". . . are you trying to find something?"

Over near the beverages, an older tourist-looking man with unkempt and kind of greasy hair was still looking in their direction, trying and failing to not seem like he was side-eyeing Keyleth.

There was the guy getting the rude gesture! Because it was like Trevor was asking to be kicked out of the buffet.

Keyleth glanced between Trevor and the guy, recognized him, and made a little meep noise when she realized what Trevor was doing.

"Oh my gosh, you don't have to do that!"

They could both get kicked out! Keyleth wasn't basically asking for it, but these things tended to just happen to her anyway.

Really, it was the rest of the party who should be prepared for her, at least when it came to the getting arrested or kicked out thing.

"Only for a minute, and he hasn't bothered me since," Keyleth objected, and never mind that the guy had been shooting weird looks in her direction ever since that moment over the minestrone.
