Lake Hotel Egilsstadir, Iceland

If you slept the rest of the way to the hotel after that hike, we don't blame you at all. We rest for the night at a country hotel close to Lake Lagarfljot (Lagarfljót). Supposedly the giant worm, Lagarfljotsormur, resides in the depths of the lake: Iceland’s version of the Loch Ness Monster. Maybe the northern lights will dance for us again tonight? On this tour our search for them never ends!

We're staying at Lake Hotel Egilsstadir, which has charming rooms--modern styled ones for the students, and antique-style for the teachers--and a renowned restaurant, noted for its innovative use of local ingredients. The town itself is mostly other hotels and guesthouses, but you can go for a wander and find a couple of different bistros, and some grocery stores if you need to stock up on bus snacks.

Sabine might have called for whoever to come in, but she also didn't want to risk it being a teacher checking up or whatever. So she got up to get the door and let her in. "Welcome to our room, which is probably exactly like your room."

"Thanks," said Astrid, moving in, and, of course, needing to give the space a good cursory overlook. "It is exactly like my room."

Which only then worked to highlight the not-even-questionable fact that their room back at Fandom was maybe one reason why just staying in Iceland wasn't 100% perfect. At least the different same rooms every day was kind of interesting, though.

"You'd think they could at least make them a little different," she said. "Mae and I were talking about painting the ceilings."

She wouldn't. It wasn't worth getting in trouble for one night when she knew they wouldn't keep it. But she wanted to.

And, great, now Astrid's eyes were roaming upward and now she wanted to paint the ceilings, too.

Maybe they'd get expelled for something like that. Maybe they wouldn't even be allowed to go back...

"What would you paint?"

She had been in jail for defacing public propery before; how much trouble could they really get into?

...but apparently, she had enough of a moral compass and way too much gratitude that they were even able to take trips like this to fuck it all up just because of itchy fingers.

"Here, the Northern Lights. It feels fitting, and I can do different things than I could on everything else I put them on."

She was going to run those colors into the ground and she did not caaaare.

"That...would look pretty cool," Astrid agreed, taking another long moment of just staring up at the ceiling and really picturing it. "There's always the ceiling back in our normal room, though, if you wanted. Or maybe we could get away with doing the common room."
seriesofbaddecisions: (was that an order or an opinion)

Sabine opened her mouth to say something, then closed it.

"You know, it's not like anyone cares what we do there..."

Astrid was a little curious about what sort of objection it looked like Sabine was gearing up to put out there, but, since she didn't, it hardly mattered.

"I've been meaning to see if I can do the ceiling down in the pool, too," she noted. "Obviously, a much bigger project, but maybe if a common room ceiling goes well..."

"Wait, we have a pool?"

Not that she was going swimming, but still!

"I get that reaction way too much," Astrid noted. "But, yes, we do, down in the basement. That's why I want to paint the ceiling. I hate being down there and looking up and not seeing sky."

"We have a pool in the basement?"

Oh, 2005.

"Okay, yes, we need to paint the basement pool ceiling."

"I knew I could count on you for help," Astrid grinned faintly. "It's definitely not a one-man job. I'm not even sure what kind of job it would be, but it'll definitely be a project."
seriesofbaddecisions: (hmm)

Re: Room 10

[personal profile] seriesofbaddecisions 2019-02-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
"We'll need to figure out logistics," Sabine mused. "I have a ladder at the warehouse, but that only helps so much when it's a pool."

Re: Room 10

"We've have to figure out where to get some decent scaffolding, probably," Astrid said, because she'd thought about this at least a little. "Unless anyone knows any good floating spells."

And the fact that she'd even said that last part with only a touch of sarcasm definitely showed just how far she'd come around to this place finally.

Which was also kind of a fun mental image.

"....jetpacks?" Astrid said after a moment. "There's some tinkering-type people here, right?"

She'd almost think about asking Dr. O'Hara about something like that if his class wasn't all pretty much 'whatever, the Danger Shop can do anything, right?' It's not like it needs to be real or anything!'

Sabine sighed. "I've been wanting one for years. But a good one."

She was holding out for a Mandalorian one.

"I...really shouldn't be surprised that that's actually a thing where you're from, should I?" said Astrid, with a self-chastising note as she shook her head. "And here, back where I'm from, we barely even have the internet."

Maybe she should introduce Sabine to moon shoes one of these days. That'd be a riot.
seriesofbaddecisions: (just about neutral)

"Some Mandalorians use them as part of their armor," she explained. "I never got my hands on one when I was there."

One day!

Re: Room 10

"That's crazy," Astrid grinned. "But kind of cool. I'd be worried about burning my butt off or something."

The extent of Astrid's experience with jet packs involved when her movie-buff neighbor was in a cheesy sci-fi B-movie mood, forgive her.

"We've progressed past that," Sabine assured her. "I'm sure there were some issues in the early days..."
