PM - Guilin, China

The flight from Xi'an gets us into Guilin just in time for a late dinner. While the bags are magically whisked over to the Shangri-La Guilin, the group is taken to Chunji Roasted Goose Restaurant where we'll be tasting the, yes, roasted goose. (If it's in the name of the restaurant, it has to be good, right?).

We're at the Shangri-La Guilin, the nicest hotel in the city, overlooking the Li River.

Rooms
For the final leg of our journey, the school has splashed out on rooms, putting everyone up on the Horizon Club level with access to the Club Lounge and truly spectacular river views from each room. They've also given each guest a plate of free fresh fruit, and you'll get a coffee, tea, or juice of your choice delivered to your room when you wake up tomorrow.

Not feeling the goose? Try out the Li Cafe, Shang Palace, the U Bar or the pizza place over by the pool. Oh, yeah, there's a pool.

The indoor pool is open until 11pm, as is the spa and sauna. Enjoy all of them!

Sidon's heart had leaped when he heard that there was a pool at this hotel, but it sunk right back down when he discovered that it was one of those kind of pools, not the clear, natural refreshing ones like back home but the artificial, chlorinated ones like the one back at the school.

But still...he'd spent an awful lot of time on dry land this trip, so he was just going to suck it up and jump in and hopefully get the unpleasant chemicals off his skin in the shower later. The coolness of the water was lovely as well, and he soon got used to it to the point where he barely even noticed the smell any more.

Did someone say free drinks? Hell yeah, they did. Free drinks and nibbles are available in the lounge all evening, you lucky ducks.

Get on out there and enjoy the sights!

The night scenery in Guilin is beautiful and it makes a great way to unwind after our flight. The ‘Two Rivers and Four Lakes’ night time river cruise is a beautiful and relaxing choice.

There's only two more days left in China after this--make sure you head to the red tents and pick up handicrafts, local specialties, souvenirs and snacks.

The hotel recommends both Baidu Bar and Amani Bar for expats.
