Good morning Fandom High students, teachers, and assorted guests! Ready to hit the slopes? The answer had better be 'yes', because that's what was happening today whether you liked it or not. Once your lesson was done, of course, you were free to do as you wished, whether that was continue hurtling down a mountain at ridiculous speeds while strapped to long sticks, or go warm up with some delicious hot beverages.

"It's probably still a question of balance," Aloy mused. "But no, I can't see it taking a great deal of work."

"Or skill," Mara said erroneously. "Other than the trees, what's there to worry about?"

"Acceleration?" Aloy offered, putting one of the skis down on the ground. "The faster you go, the harder fine movement becomes?"

Not that this would stop her from trying.

"That makes sense," Mara said, "but is that what the sticks are for? To help slow down or something? Like brakes."

"That, and presumably to help you move on a flat surface," Aloy said, watching the others. "Otherwise your other limbs are pretty useless."

"True," Mara said. "I went to the snoeshow thing yesterday, and those look even more unwieldy than these things."

"I've seen those," Aloy mused. "Looks useful for long distances, but not more than that."

She and Rost had never done long distances. The valley was only so big.

"Yeah, give me a comfortable pair of shoes, or better yet, an animal bred for transport," Mara said.

"Animals bred for transport?" Aloy echoed. "Is that a thing here?"

Mara nodded. "And back home as well," she said. "Is it not true for you?"

"Not really, no," Aloy said. "My people live off the land."

And also those animals hadn't been spoiler spoilered yet.

"Farmers or hunter-gatherers?" Mara asked, looking interested.

"That last one, mostly," Aloy said. "We farm a little, but it's not enough to keep us alive."

"Interesting," Mara said. "What brought you to our school, then?"

"Accident?" Aloy said. "I didn't want to be here."

Mara winced. "I'm sorry," she said. "Have you at least found your time here to be valuable?"
