Kaiser-Franz-Josef Hütten, Tyrol, Austria [Monday, daytime]

Good morning Fandom High students, teachers, and assorted guests! Ready to hit the slopes? The answer had better be 'yes', because that's what was happening today whether you liked it or not. Once your lesson was done, of course, you were free to do as you wished, whether that was continue hurtling down a mountain at ridiculous speeds while strapped to long sticks, or go warm up with some delicious hot beverages.

That was because Jono had no sense of fashion.

"Nothing new," Hannibal answered, "but a few reminders. It's good to have it in the front of my mind."

As the instructor wrapped up, Hannibal turned to Jono and smiled. "Shall we?"

Jono had a fantastic sense of fashion. Case in point: It didn't involve earflaps.

//Let's,// Jono replied, nodding. //It'll be strange doing this without half as many trees to run into, y'know. I probably could've faked my way through expert anyhow.//

Now was probably not the time for second thoughts, there.

Maybe he'd take the class again tomorrow if today went well.

It wasn't just Peridot. Jason just figured it was one of those things where they kind of... gradually increased the difficulty on you as you went.

Too bad he hadn't paid more attention to the lessons, or he'd realize that the beginner trail was clearly marked and this.

This was not.

What was clearly marked, though? That steep embankment that he was headed right for.

Naturally, just as he noticed said warning sign, the tip of one of his skis caught on something, sending him tumbling end-over-end and...

down the side of the mountain.

Ooops.

[lovely radio squirrels and/or peoples: that jason crashed is fine to mention, but extent of said crash and everything afterwards is nfb]

You know, the funny thing about doing the 'snow plow' manoeuvre in order to slow down? Was that it did not really help one in their efforts to slow down when realizing one's folly a moment too late and following a friend right down the side of a mountain.

It especially did not help in that regard when somewhere in the tumble, one lost one ski and continued down the rest of the way alternating between being on one's butt, and just flat-out in the air.

This was not the most graceful moment for either of them, really, was it? It was fortunate that Peridot was made of sturdy stuff, or else Jason would have found himself arriving at the bottom of the mountain accompanied only by a large green gemstone tucked away in a tumbling ski boot.

... She was probably going to land on him at the bottom, though.

And land on him she did!

'Fortunate' was not the word Jason was going to use when dealing with said sturdy stuff landing on his midsection. More like: "Ow."

Sturdy stuff was going to mutter something that sounded a little bit like 'ow' herself before blinking a few times, and then sitting bolt upright, staring down at Jason before she started to pat him down for bodily damage.

"Oh my stars, are you broken? It's okay, I'm in Dr. Lecter's first aid class, I know how to--" She paused a moment, and then said, "perform triage and call for help, mostly. Do you need either of those things?"

It helped that there was nobody else down here at the bottom of the mountain. Jason had pretty good chances of being treated first in a triage pool like that.

'Are you broken' was something of a complicated question, as it happened. He was bleeding from a gash on his head, yes, and his bad knee was sending daggers of pain up his right leg and... oh. His left leg was bent at a decidedly unnatural angle.

The 'complicated' part arose from the fact that he'd be more or less fine in an hour or two. And just how in the hell was he supposed to explain that?

"I don't suppose they covered setting bones at all?" he asked hopefully. He'd rather avoid 'calling for help' if at all possible. Because see above re: not wanting to explain things.

PEOPLE WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE SHAPED LIKE THAT. Peridot made a bit of a squeaking sound as she surveyed the extent of the damage, and then scrambled to get off of him, staring at the leg in question.

"Bones, right. Broken bones. We did cover that," she said, "that was the very last class, in case of ski accidents."

Which, hey, this was! Well-timed, Hannibal!

"I need... I need something to immobilize that with-- ah!" Her surviving ski would do nicely, rigid and straight as it was, though she didn't exactly have anything to lash it to Jason's leg with. She looked at his clothing speculatively, and then grimaced a little. "Maybe I'll put your internal structural framework back into place before I fashion a splint, yes."

"My... what?" She meant the bones in your leg, Jason.

Look, he'd developed a reasonably high pain tolerance since getting superpowers, but there was 'getting beaten up by rock monsters' pain and then there was 'falling off a mountain' pain. So his thinking wasn't the clearest right now, okay?

"Your leg," Peridot said, a touch tersely as she undid the ski from her boot and set it to the side. "I'm going to put your leg back together."

Wishing the entire while that Steven was here so he could just spit things better, yes. But she was a Peridot, she was a technician of Homeworld and a hero to Earth. She could handle putting some bones back in the right order. She just needed a moment to kind of compose herself, and then she put her hands carefully on Jason's leg.

"If Earth fiction is any indication at all, this is going to," she paused, trying to remember the appropriate word. "Suck."

And then she was going for it. Hannibal's lessons hadn't been terribly focused on pain management as of yet. This was kind of like combat medic get-the-job-done stuff, and Peridot had never been terribly gentle. But so help her clod, she was going to set that bone right.

'Suck' was about the right of it, yeah.

And to add insult to (heh) injury, as Jason shouted in pain, he flailed one arm out and connected with a nearby tree. The snow that had been resting on the branches was shaken loose by the impact, landing on his face.

"Ugh." He declared eloquently.

"... Well, why did you do that? Will the cold help with your head injury?"

Peridot dusted her hands off, and then frowned back at the ski. And then at Jason's leg.

"I need to tie that to your leg. To splint it. Do you have anything I can use?"

She was kind of naked except for her ski boots, after all.

It was just about all black, half jeans, and dotted with occasional holes.

"I might have been able to as well, but it's been some time," Hannibal said. "Your last time was Glacia?"

There was also the very, very occasional flannel!

Very occasional.

//Mm,// Jono agreed. //As a somewhat larger, bluer man. Not much opportunity to ski since, really.//

"That wasn't on purpose," Jason gritted out. "My scarf, maybe?" If they were going to be sitting here for a few hours while his bones healed, the scarf was probably the part of his skiing gear he could do without.

Flannel wasn't much of an improvement. Even if it was at least plaid.

"And your balance will be completely different now." Hannibal nodded. "So perhaps this isn't a bad place to start. You can always switch to advanced tomorrow."

Peridot took note of the scarf, nodded, and then moved to (rather more carefully) unwrap it from Jason's neck, shimmy back down to his leg, and then proceeded to splint it.

"That should do," she sighed, then made her way back up to sit in the snow by his face again. "How's your head? You're losing blood there."

It was far more distressing to see it happen in real life, coming from somebody that she knew.

"It's fine," Jason said, trying to sound reassuring. Because it was fine, mostly. He was pretty sure he could feel the wound healing already, as it happened. "So, uh. How much do you know about how long it takes humans to heal from different kinds of injuries?" he asked casually. Or attempted to sound casual, anyway. That much was hard when you were dealing with a broken leg and a head wound, fast healing or no.

"I've seen those," Aloy mused. "Looks useful for long distances, but not more than that."

She and Rost had never done long distances. The valley was only so big.

Peridot really didn't have anything to bandage Jason's head with, anyway. Where would she even keep a first-aid kit?

"I've never witnessed human healing times personally," she replied. "This is the first time I've ever seen a human so seriously damaged before," and it was difficult to keep the concern out of her voice. "But... I'm led to believe that it takes weeks, even months, to recover from a break that serious."

She looked at him uncomfortably.

"We really should call somebody. I can't carry you back."

Most Gems were at the very least superhumanly strong. Era Two Peridots, on the other hand...

Flannel was comfortable without looking stupid. And leather was always in style!

//True enough. I've still got the theory, and it isn't as though I'm out of shape, but tackling a few intermediate slopes for th'time being is probably for the best.// He let out an amused little flicker of emotion. //Either way, this is already going better than th'last time I was in the Alps.//

"Oh?" Hannibal smiled. "Tell me about that time."

//Not a hell of a lot to tell, these days,// Jono replied after a pause. //Kurt grabbed me and teleported to get us out of the path of an explosion, we wound up in the bloody mountains, and it took bloody forever for me to be able to contact somebody who gave enough of a shite to come and get us, because Warren ignored anybody who told him that we might not be dead.//

Jono came by his loathing of Warren honestly, really.

//Got through to Mira, instead,// he added, after another brief silence. //Once she stopped yelling at me to stay out of her head, she made bloody certain someone came to get us.//

Which they did more for Kurt than for him, no doubt, but it was still nice that she had cared.

Damn, he missed Mira.

"But you get so much more done when you're up early!" Steve said. Cheerily.

"Or I can get things done at night." Rather than sleep sometimes.
