Indiana Dunes State Park- Friday evening

By the time the group rolled in to the Indiana Dunes it was probably too late to do any real hiking, but you had plenty of time to get set up for the night. Which meant putting up tents, building fires and cooking. You know, the fun stuff before the temperature dipped into the high 40's overnight.

You could also explore the campgrounds! There were electrical hookups... but the ones at this site were on the fritz, so hopefully people brought portable chargers if they really needed their phones. Or you could ask someone at a neighboring site to ask theirs and make new friends. There was also a pump for fresh water and bathrooms that were nearbyish, if you didn't mind a little bit of walking.

So maybe tonight was a little bit of work. It'd just mean you really earned whatever dinner and junk food you brought.

Irene wasn't struggling to pitch her tent. That would involve actually, you know, picking up the canvas and the little sticks from the ground and doing something with them, rather than just standing there in horror and staring at them.

"...we're sleeping in these? I thought there'd be, you know -- cabins, or something? Maybe a hotel?"

Sia had enough training in the outdoors that starting a fire wasn't a problem at all. And once that was going she looked through to see what kind of food they had and if any of it was really appetizing.

"This," Irene said, gesturing to the tent-thingies on the ground with one manicured finger (and now she was realizing that that probably wasn't going to last through the weekend, damn it), "is not civilized. I didn't realize we'd be going somewhere without walls."

And that was when the horror truly struck. "Oh my god. Where -- where is the loo?"

There better be a goddamn loo, Kitty. Or Irene was going to just...hold it all weekend. THE WHOLE TIME.

"They are made of the same material as kites and dresses sold at Wal-Mart," said Irene, who had never even stepped foot in a Wal-Mart so just ignore her. "They don't count."

"There haven't been any inside any of the cabins I've been to before," Irene told her contrarily.

Guess how many cabins she had been to before? (Airplane cabins and other jokes about traveling did not count, here.)

"Hot dog?" Four offered with a smile. "I even brought two sticks."

He'd have been a Boy Scout if that had still been a thing.

"Thank you," Sia smiled back. "I'm trying to avoid anything canned for the moment."

"You know, before I fake-died I was quite the little jet-setter," Irene told her. "I've traveled to five of our seven continents. So of course I've come across a cabin or two."

Probably? From a distance? Look, she was a world-class traveler, but usually it involved air-conditioning and a lot of alcohol. But whatever, that was irrelevant here.

Look, these accomodations were downright luxurious compared to having to find the least horrible bridge in Paris to sleep under during winter. Even when they'd had a place to live, it had been filthy and awful and far too many people crowded into one room with no privacy, so Éponine didn't really balk at the prospect of sharing a tent with someone.

She'd likely have more personal space than she used to have under most of those bridges, god knew.

This didn't mean she wasn't sitting, turning one of the tent stakes over in her hands and looking at the pile of canvas with a bemused expression while she tried to figure it out. Which she would! Eventually. Hopefully before Cosette came over and tried to help.

Oh, Cosette was absolutely going to try her hand at making s'mores here. She'd read about it, and she was excited, okay?

In her excitement she'd skipped right past the concept of dinner, but . . . s'mores.

"Irene, right?" Jessica asked. She noted the look of horror. "I'm Jessica. I can put together our tent, don't worry about it."

[I will have NO TIME to ping regularly until later, but I had to at least ping in for now.]

"I will love you forever if you do," Irene said, clasping a hand to her chest gratefully. "Jessica, correct? I can repay the favor in...oh, I don't know. Mixing you a cocktail? Hair-braiding? These are really more in line with my skill set."

So this weekend was going to be fun.

[lol you know I'm going off to weekend madness tonight anyway so NO WORRIES WE'RE JUST GOING TO SP CAMPING FOR AWHILE. :D]

"More a cabin girl than a tent girl," Irene said, which was absolutely true. But she was also more a five-star resort girl than a cabin girl, so.... "Is this a normal thing you do? Like, you seem relatively at ease here, darling."

And you were almost getting side-eyed for that, Kitty. Something between side-eyeing and admiration was going on, anyway.

"Some kind of bean thing, and what looks like... spaghetti in a can?" she said, taking the stick. "Maybe tomorrow I'll feel more adventurous."
