Los Angeles, California, 1978 (Sunday, February 22nd)

The first sign that things weren't exactly right was the Hollywood sign: not exactly the tourist trap-y mandatory photo it was back in 2015. The next was the outfits of the other passengers: there's a lot of polyester. Like a lot. No one's worn hair this terrible unironically in decades other than Anakin. And that's when it dawned: this might be Los Angeles, and the school was definitely about to go on a cruise along the Mexican coast...but it wasn't in 2015.

Not at all groovy, man. And the worst part? You can't even Instagram the photographic evidence! All electronics have stopped receiving signals, too. Portalocity went hardcore this time. There's a little bit of time to explore where and when you've been dropped off before the ship disembarked, but not enough time to return to the island.

"I don't think much would fit," Mara said, peering into the glass. "What'd you end up with as a drink? Maybe I'll try that the next time."

"I made sure the bartender didn't get overly creative with my drink," he said, holding up the glass and jingling the ice around. "I don't need a mashed banana and mango pureed into a mix. I just wanted booze. So, there's vodka and some kind of juice in there. No umbrella."

Mara dropped her umbrella into his drink. "But I'm keeping the plastic monkey."

"That in need of a friend?" he asked, taking a long sip of his drink. "Must be stuck with an awful roommate."

"I have friends," Mara said, frowning at him. "And my roommate's Gwen, who's pretty great. You were just a familiar face."

Ronan snorted but didn't say anything in reply to that. Instead, he looked around and made a face.

"This place is painful to look at," he observed. "It's physically hurting me."

"The men's hair is weirdly familiar," Mara admitted, sipping from her drink, "but the rest of it...no."

"Weirdly familiar?" He squinted at the hair like it might look different or, better yet, not horrible. But no. "This what guys look like where you're from? Unfortunate."

"It really, really is," Mara agreed. "Entire galaxy of helmet hair."

Ronan drained his drink and went to order another one.

"There a reason that terrible hair hasn't gone out of style there yet?" he finally asked. "Is product just that plentiful there?"

"Not the way Tarkin goes through it," Mara murmured, mostly to herself. "I guess so?" she added more loudly. "Weird, though. The Emperor doesn't have much hair to speak of and his right hand person wears a full mask over his head."

Ronan slanted her a look. "You from some weird S&M city or something?"

Mara laughed. "Not that I know about," she said. "Darth Vader was badly burned or something? No one really talks about it and he's not exactly the most approachable person."

"Darth Vader?" Yeah, Ronan was rolling his eyes now. "Someone's compensating for something. Who names themselves that?"

Mara's eyes said "a total douche, right?" even if her mouth is a little smarter than to vocalize that where someone could get it recorded.

Imperial Center paranoia was drilled into her.

"I have no idea."

"Maybe you could ask him what's up the next time you see him," Ronan said dryly. "Make a connection between you and ..." Ronan didn't even wanna say it. "Darth Vader."

So, he'd say it while rolling his eyes.

"I don't want any sort of connection with him," Mara said with a little shudder, taking a gulp from her fruity, fruity drink.

"Not your type?" Ronan guessed, leaning back against the bar. "Too bad. I'm sure it'd be a point of pride if you could say you'd banged someone named Darth Vader."

That or a point of ridicule.

"Ewwwwwwwww," Mara said. "No. No thank you. Not ever. Gross."

She'd just marry his kid!

Ronan snickered briefly. "So, you'd prefer Mr. Plaid Poleyester over there?"

Glass in hand, Ronan gestured to some older man with helmet hair wearing a blue and white plaid suite.

"Yes," Mara said immediately without even looking at what sort of horror Ronan was setting her up with.

Because it would be better than Darth Vader.
