Copacabana Palace, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Friday - Evening

The night is for terrible things, not the day, silly ~~narrative~~ revelers. Especially when the night is clear, warm, and filled with the sizzling sounds of sssssamba! It might be Lent now, but it's still Rio, and it's still Friday. Time for dancing on the sand, in the clubs, and if you think there's no dancing in the streets anymore, you must be walking down the wrong street. Turn left by the man with the saxophone; drop a tip in his hat and he'll tell you where to go from there.

Ben tilted his head as he checked through the Force to see who it was, then padded to the door to open it up. "Hey, Topher. Want to come in?"

"Yep!" Topher said brightly. Thanks for the invite, Ben. "Hey! Um, what's up? Are you okay?"

Oh, for god's sake.

Ben frowned. "Sure. I'm just taking a break from going out tonight." He grinned. "Ender went clubbing."

"He did?" Topher asked, side-eyeing. "Why?" THAT DID NOT STRIKE HIM AS A HOBBY OF ENDER'S.

"Probably to observe people," Ben said, settling back down on the bed and shifting aside some of the trays so there was a spot for Topher to sit too. "He's not a drinker."

Topher flopped down on the bed and presented his own plate of snacks. Because he was considerate. And stuff. "Yeah, I noticed the... milk thing," he said, grinning a little.

A beat.

"But what's up with you?"

Topher. Never try to be compassionate. Never.

Ben blinked. "I went hang gliding today? Oh, and ordered the entire dessert section of the room service menu."

Busy day, clearly.

"Cool," Topher said, nodding. "That's cool. Um. So you're not, like, sad or anything? About stuff?" Oh, good god.

Ben fought the urge to facepalm. "Did you talk to Ender or to Tony?" he asked.

Topher shifted. "Yes?"

Not the question, Topher.

Ben groaned and pressed a pillow over his face. "Toooopher," he whined.

"What?" Topher asked, genuinely confused.

Ben reminded himself that it was a good thing that people cared about his well-being and took the pillow off of his head. "Nothing," he said. "But people generally work up to asking people about how they are if they mean it in more than a small-talk-y way."

"Oh!" See, he could do that! Or he could try, anyway. "Um... can I start over?"

Topher. Topher.

Ben grinned. "Sure. You don't have to knock again or anything, though."

"'Kay," Topher decided. He was going to build right back up to it, though, Ben. FYI. "So... did you and Ender like the party?"

"It had its moments," Ben said with a smile, "but it's not really how we're planning on spending every weekend from now on. How about you? Did you have fun?"

"But at least you didn't text anyone!" Topher pointed out optimistically.

"I didn't!" Ben said proudly. "Most of you were there anyway..."

"Not that that usually stops you," Topher pointed out, grinning.

Ben wrinkled his nose up at him. "Yeah, yeah. I told Ender I wouldn't."

Other than Jaina, but that was family.

"You have a lot of self-restraint," Topher decided. A beat. "...even when you're sad!"

TOPHER.

"What makes you think I'm sad?" Ben asked.

Topher paused. "Ender said there was bad stuff," he settled on.

"There's always bad stuff back home," Ben said with a little frown. "We're kind of war-torn."

If you looked carefully, this was Ben opening up. Sort of.
