Copacabana Palace, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Friday - Evening

The night is for terrible things, not the day, silly narrative revelers. Especially when the night is clear, warm, and filled with the sizzling sounds of sssssamba! It might be Lent now, but it's still Rio, and it's still Friday. Time for dancing on the sand, in the clubs, and if you think there's no dancing in the streets anymore, you must be walking down the wrong street. Turn left by the man with the saxophone; drop a tip in his hat and he'll tell you where to go from there.

So he was bragging, so what. Bragging was useful. She put her glass on the counter in front of him.

"Tell the bartender to get me a new drink, in a clean glass this time, and I want a cherry and an umbrella. And to use the fresh pineapple juice, not the canned stuff." A pause. "Thanks."

Jace's eyebrows about shot up into his hairline at that request, but he didn't mind being bitchy at a bartender. It was kind of fun, actually. So he had no trouble waving down the bartender and putting in Quinn's request, even insinuating that there'd be trouble for him if he didn't get it right.

"Does the umbrella add something to drinks?" he asked after the bartender got the order.

"No, I just like playing with it," Quinn said, unashamed as she picked it out to twirl between her fingers. "Besides, the guy was a dick. A place like this should wash the glasses."

Her request would have been simpler if it wasn't for that, or if she hadn't been testing Jace a bit. (He passed.)

"Have you been here a lot?"

"This bar or Brazil in general?" Jace asked. "Either way, the answer is no. I don't travel away from New York much. Aside from school, I mean."

"I meant the bar," Quinn explained. "It seems like people have been in here pretty much every night. I can see why."

She sipped at her juice. "I guess if you're from New York, you don't need to travel."

"I'm not from New York, I just live there," Jace corrected. "But it certainly doesn't get boring, you're right about that. The weather in Brazil is better though."
