Getting out into Coruscant [Friday afternoon into Saturday afternoon]

Anakin pointed out of one of the vaulted Temple windows towards the busy cityscape in front of them.

"And that is Coruscant. Clubs, restaurants, shopping, incredibly egotistical politicians, useless bureaucrats...it's all out there." He pointed to the nearest public transport pickup location. "Don't go lower than the mid-levels of Coruscant unless you're looking to disappear permanently," he warned. "There are a trillion beings on this planet, and it has a thriving underworld who are as ruthless as any you'll ever come across."

Sam turned around, "Is it really? I would have thought it had been going on for much longer." Based purely on the vitriol. Oh, Elizabeth would have had a field day.

The man smiled. "There isn't exactly a middle ground to be found on this. Senators have decided early what they think and now they're determined to shout the other side down. Democracy in action."

"And you? Where do you stand?"

"With Senator Amidala," he replied, pointing to the woman speaking in the center of the rotunda. "I believe that we need to let diplomacy have a real chance before we resort to an army. We haven't needed one for a thousand years. A few more months can't possibly hurt."

He gave her a smile. "But I'm Alderaanian. We haven't had weapons on our world for centuries."

"Aren't you afraid of being attacked?" Sam asked, curiously, "and is there a lack of violence on your world, or do individuals just not use weapons against each other?"

"Who would attack us?" Bail asked. "We're a center of learning, of the arts. We live in harmony with nature, strive for understanding--and other worlds respect us for it." He smiled. "This is what Alderaan is, has been for millennia beyond counting." He raised an eyebrow. "Is your world different?"

"We aspire to be what it sounds like you are," Sam winced when one of the Senators started shouting in some language she didn't understand, "but in reality, we're still a very primitive world."

"Sometimes we're not as enlightened as we'd like," Bail replied, wincing as well. "That...was not very polite."

"But you manage without weapons, which is impressive," She couldn't help laughing quietly. "And no, I didn't think it was."

"Oh, that's just Alderaan. It doesn't apply even to the rest of our sector, let alone the entire galaxy." Bail smiled. "As much as we wish it could."

"And you really don't feel vulnerable, knowing that everyone has weapons and you're...defenseless?" Sam asked, trying to get past her own prejudices on this subject.

"We're not defenseless," Bail said with a smile. "If anything truly terrible were to happen, we have the Jedi."

"Right," Sam ducked her head, "I'm sorry. I forgot about the Jedi. No wonder you don't worry."

"You come from a world without Jedi?" Bail blinked. "How strange."

"We're borrowing Anakin for a few months," Sam replied, "but no, we don't have Jedi where I'm from. I understand we're the worse for it."

"Anakin?" Bail repeated.

"Er, Anakin Skywalker?" Sam wondered if she'd just made everyone's lives much more difficult.

Bail frowned. "I think I've heard...he's Obi-Wan Kenobi's Padawan, right? Master Kenobi is currently on my homeworld working out a series of trade negotiations."

Re: Visit the Galactic Senate

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-30 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, he's Master Kenobi's Padawan," Sam nodded, "and I had heard that he wasn't going to be here, which is unfortunate. How are the negotiations going? And what are you negotiating for?"

Re: Visit the Galactic Senate

[personal profile] fh_extras 2006-06-30 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Inter-sector information exchange, mostly," Bail said. "Communications technology between Alderaan and Naboo. We have very good relations, but it never hurts to have a Jedi overseeing the procedings." He smiled. "And Master Kenobi is one of the very best. We were fortunate to get him."

"Communications technology?" Sam asked, wondering if she was being too nosy. "And congratulations on the negotiations."

It rather belatedly occurred to Sam that she was speaking with a Senator.

"Latest in HoloNet, mostly," Bail said. "And then everything gets technical and slightly tedious."

There was a definite shift in tone from the Senators in the Rotunda. "I should probably go look into that," Bail said, wincing.

"Enjoy the rest of the debate," Bail replied with a smile, then walked off.
