Getting out into Coruscant [Friday afternoon into Saturday afternoon]

Anakin pointed out of one of the vaulted Temple windows towards the busy cityscape in front of them.



"And that is Coruscant. Clubs, restaurants, shopping, incredibly egotistical politicians, useless bureaucrats...it's all out there." He pointed to the nearest public transport pickup location. "Don't go lower than the mid-levels of Coruscant unless you're looking to disappear permanently," he warned. "There are a trillion beings on this planet, and it has a thriving underworld who are as ruthless as any you'll ever come across."

"Clothes, huh?" Sam took a look around for a stall or a store or something. "Hey, a handful of letters sometimes make words. You know more than I do. And I don't know--my instructions were something cool. I assume he doesn't mean anything scientific, so I may need some help."

"Hmm." Rory frowned thoughtfully, spying what seemed to be a toy store, given the amount of children - human and otherwise - running around, plus the bright colors. "A toy? I bet they have action figures and stuffed things in there."

"Perfect," Sam grinned, "Are you going to get something for your new brother or sister?"

"Ooh, I should," Rory mused. "And he's a boy." She smiled. "I have a little sister, too, though, who I just saw, so maybe I should get her something, too. I just don't want to buy so much that I can't fit it all in my bags."

"That's nice--you'll have one of each, then," Sam smiled, then made what could have been a tactical error. "I have some spare room in my bag, I think, if you need me to take something."

Rory perked up a little. "I might take you up on that," she declared, grinning. She picked up a stuffed pig-like thing. "I wonder if this is a Gamor-thingy like what Anakin was talking about the other day. It's kind of ugly enough."

She looked around, embarrassed, in case there were actual Gamorreans around.

"I think you're clear," Sam said, after a quick glance around of her own. "And it's interesting, but does it really say Charlie Kawalsky?" She tilted her head and considered. "It's not a purple thong, but maybe..."

"No, not really," Rory decided. "But Bucky might like it."

That was when she spotted the action figures. "Sam! Look! Wee bitty Jedi!"

"Bucky?" Sam asked, then grinned when she saw the action figures. "Is there an Anakin doll?"

"I don't see one," Rory said, scanning over the dolls. "Oh! Look, though."

She held up two dolls. "Obi-Wan and Master Windu! Oh," she added, "and Bucky is William Starbucks Gilmore-Danes. Baby-to-be."

"Okay, so far, those are winning for coolest gift." Sam picked up one of each, then inspiration struck, "Ooh! Do they have practice light sabers? Or toy light sabers, or something?"

"Why Bucky?" She asked, amused by the middle name. "And do you owe royalties to the coffee company?"

"Short for the Starbucks part," Rory said, sidling over to where there was a display of toy lightsabers. "Because I don't like Will or Billy. I mean, Mom got 'Rory' out of Lorelai, so why go the normal route on this kid either?"

She picked up a blue one, and smiled as it lit up. "Which color do you think he'd want?"

Sam looked the selection over, and was really tempted to be evil and buy him a pink one. "Green, maybe?" She flicked one on at random. "Ooh, purple. He can have this one and I'll get Cameron a blue one, so they can fight it out."

She collected the lightsabers and took a Windu, a Yoda, and..."Is there an Obi Wan?"

"There is!" Rory said, holding up a tiny bearded figure. "I'm getting one for my sister. She'll probably dress him up in tiny doll clothes. And you realize, I'm imagining them duking it out in the middle of the common room or something. They're such boys."

Sam grabbed an Obi Wan figure as well, then looked around for the register. "And they are definitely boys, but would you want them to be any other way?"

"Okay, I need to get out of this store," she laughed as she picked up two Obi Wan figures for Parker and Jaye. "Let's pay and then get you some clothes that could knock the socks off any best friends you may happen to run into."

"No, they wouldn't be as much fun," Rory agreed, figuring that the several-eyed alien creature taking money was probably where they needed to head. She carefully counted out the money like Anakin had shown them, and tried not to stare as she took her purchases.

"And best friends losing their socks are always a good thing," she added, grinning. "Though that's kind of hard, here, considering it's kind of hard to be discreet when I don't know how to block things from people who can pick up my emotions and there are a lot of them here."

Sam made her purchases, fumbling a little with the unfamiliar money, then collected the toys.

"Well," she suggested, after a few minutes of deciphering what Rory had said, "maybe the key is for you to act like it's nothing out of the ordinary. It's okay if you're, er, best friends, right? Leave any hiding up to him, and let them read what they want from you--the problem is with your best friend's feelings, right, not yours? Let anyone being snoopy just think it's unrequited."

"That's the most logical solution, and what happened when Obi-Wan visited," Rory said as they emerged from the store and she glanced around. "And I'm okay with it. I mean, the feelings are what they are, and I don't care if people think I'm pining."

She glanced sidelong at Sam. "How are things with you in the whole, um, best friend category? I keep hearing stuff about you and Jack, but I hear stuff aboout Jack and everyone, so...."

"Jack and I are..." Sam wasn't quite sure how to explain it. She stopped to look into a jewelry store window. "We're friends. Not best friends, but good friends. He says he's not the falling in love type, and I'm okay with not being in love for a while. It's too damn painful."

Rory glanced in the window and idly toyed with the pulsating blue stone around her neck. "I can agree with that," she said quietly. "But it's fun in the interim, before getting your heart stomped on and everything."

"Yeah, for those three days, everything's amazing," Sam agreed. "C'mon, let's find you clothes. And maybe me."

"Well, we just hit six months," Rory said, shrugging as she pointed to what seemed to obviously be a clothing shop. She made a little squeaky noise. "Look at all the clothes!"

"Here!" Rory said. "We stick out like sore thumbs. I'll wear it out tonight. And maybe do my hair like the manequin if I can swing it."

Sam stared at the mannequin, then at Rory. "I think you need another head to have the hair the mannequin does. And do you have plans for tonight?"
