Southeastern Iceland, Skaftafell to Höfn, Tuesday, February 20, 2019 [Afternoon and Evening]

After our nice, relaxing 3-hour-hike and birdnapping attempt, we get back in the minibuses (make sure you haven't "accidentally lost" your nametags, Minibus #3) and drive towards the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and its famous Diamond Beach. After that, it's on to our actual, real, non-tent hotel for the evening located just outside the village of Höfn. The Northern Lights won't be quite as spectacular as the were last night, but the village is small enough not to kick up a lot of light pollution, so the view will still be pretty amazing.

We're staying tonight at Fosshotel Vatnajökul, a hotel with modern rooms and fantastic views of the Vatnajökull Glacier we just finished hiking around. So your muscles will thank you for that reminder in the morning! Students are in the deluxe double rooms and teachers are in the suites.

No tubs for students tonight (sorry, Sidon) but also no cowhide? Or tents?

The restaurant in the hotel is famous for its langoustine: a dish it prepares so well that it helps to employee 100 people in Höfn to provide them.

The lagoon is breathtaking as the sun goes down. If you look carefully, you might spot seals in the water (DO NOT STEAL ONE). You can also elect to do even more walking and head into an ice cave if you still have energy for it. You'll catch a separate minibus back to the hotel so the rest of us don't have to wait on you.

If you want to explore away from the hotel, there's a minibus available to take you into and out of Höfn . There are a couple other restaurants and places to wander around in if two days on a minibus has got you feeling a little tired of your schoolmates.

Tomorrow we have art, reindeer, and even more hiking!

Oh boy.

Of course Steve wanted to see an ice cave. Was he half expecting to find an science-fiction monster inside it?

...maybe. But! Ice cave! Let's go!

Vette was not a fan of the cold.

She was a fan of exploring caves, though, and so the pitch her squeal of excitement managed to reach before she made a beeline for that cave could probably only be heard by dogs and puffins.

There... probably wasn't ancient treasure in there.

She was fine with that.

Peebee was definitely up for seeing an ice cave!

She did not steal one of the seals, it was worth noting, but she absolutely formulated about ten ways to do so in her head.

Prompto was pretty sure he couldn't feel his trigger fingers anymore, but he wasn't going to let that stop him from adding shot of a freaking ICE CAVE to his already extensive album of photographs so far.

AND THE SEALS!!! Don't get him started on the seals, he would not be able to STOP if you got him started on the seals!

Sabine was absolutely going into an ice cave. There probably wasn't anything more interesting Han just ice and more ice in there and she did not care.

She did not think about stealing seals.

It was Tuesday. The hotel had a bar. Rosa was definitely going to be there getting at least a drink or two. It really was just habit, though she probably shouldn't be giving the bartenders the stink-eye just for not being Kitty, especially when Kitty actually was here.

At least they weren't Tino, though! She'll drink to that.

Kitty had about an hour free, with Clint watching Lexi, and... she went to the bar. It was Tuesday. It felt right.

She wasn't drinking alcohol tonight, but that was not the point.

"So this is what it's like on this side of the bar," Kitty said, sitting next to her.

Mae had already spent most of this trip trying to not be too obvious about how she was pretending to be Adina Astra looking for the Frozen Lake and the Forest God. And now here they were, getting to explore an ice cave.

"Oh man," she said, looking up at all the ice, her hands braced on her hips. "Please tell me this place is haunted."

It basically had to be, right? Maybe if they built a snowman it would give the ghosts something to talk through. . . .

Yep. Yep, Peebee was definitely going to take that trip into town to get away from people for a while.

She ended up at a very expensive restaurant, trying the weirdest things on the menu, and being disappointed when none of them were quite as weird as she was hoping they'd be.

"I hope you don't get too used to it," Rosa noted. "I hate having to find a new bar."

Out of the...one other one available on the island. Which wasn't even right across the street.

"You'll have to let me get you a drink, though," she added, because Kitty definitely deserved one, not only for having to deal with the other side of a bar on these nights usually, but also, you know...for dragging a baby across Iceland.

Kitty, Rosa liked you and everything, but she was really glad she was not on your bus.

She'd been good on the bus so far!

So far.

"Are you going to be disappointed if I'm non-alcoholic tonight?"

Rosa shook her head. "Anything you want," she assured her, "as long as it's on me."

She never got to sit on the same side of the bar with Kitty, so that would be kind of nice no matter what they were drinking.

"All right, then I'm getting a Coke and will pretend there's rum in it," she said. "See, I'm still cool."

"Still cool," Rosa agreed, lifting her beer in solidarity. "Bonus points if you remember to slur your speech just a little when you get to the end of it."

"I don't think I slur normally so that might be a challenge," she pointed out.

Yes she did.

"I wouldn't know," Rosa shrugged. "So just humor me."

One day, maybe, she'll get to see Drunk Kitty. As elusive as Six Drink Amy had once been.

Then again, Six Drink Amy was just sad, so...maybe some things were best left a mystery.

Clint had promised to watch Lexi so Kitty could have an evening to herself, which wasn't so bad since Lexi was exhausted from not knowing what time it was. Of course, that also meant Clint was exhausted, so what started as "taking Lexi for a sleepy stroll through the hotel" turned into "sitting down in a comfortable chair and falling asleep with Lexi on his chest." At least he wasn't snoring?
