Brickyard Retreat, Mutianyu Village, Monday Evening [March 5, 2018]

As the sun started going down, the temperature dropped low enough that the fire in the lodge was going to feel very good--but first there was dinner!

The school has rented out the Schoolhouse, located a few blocks from the Brickhouse, and arranged for a lesson in making traditional noodles. Don't miss out!

Beginning at 4:30, we have rented out the Schoolhouse for an immersive lesson in making traditional Chinese dinner: we'll learn how to make noodles and pickles, cook up chicken, and prepare other food commonly found in Hebei Province. Dinner's at 6 sharp! Don't miss out!

While the lighting in the village is not amazing, you can still go for an evening ramble (or a cover-of-darkness assault on the Great Wall of China. But we don't recommend that second one). Well, a quick ramble. It's cold.

The Brickyard, located in the center of Mutianyu, preserves an important part of China’s rural outposts while injecting modern comforts to create simple and luxurious boutique accommodation near the Great Wall of China.

Today, the Brickyard is no longer a smoke-belching tile factory but a resort striving to be a sustainable operation conscious of both our environment and our community.

Students will find themselves in the Premium Twin (or Premium Queen if it's funnier) rooms, with views of the Great Wall from the window, and wifi so you can Instagram that shit. Teachers and their guests are sleeping in the Deluxe Queen rooms, slightly larger than what the students get, and with better, unobstructed views of the Wall.

There's plenty to see and do after dinner. Lear how to play mahjong in the Card Room. Watch a movie in the Video & Game Room (Tonight's movie: House of Flying Daggers. So good). Shop in the Lobby. Read a book and enjoy a drink in the Lodge. Soak your sore muscles away in the Jacuzzi while stargazing. Just let us know where you are so we can join you!

Steve was extremely talented at many things. Making Chinese noodles...not remotely one of them. He'd managed to knot up his noodle dough at least three times. No one was quite sure how that had happened.

Aloy was not the neatest of cooks, so her noodles were messy. But she was snacking away on them like making them had been no big deal.

It'd been quite some time since Jenkins just sat down and enjoyed a good movie (since the 1960s, possibly). And while he himself had never quite gotten into Eastern martial arts as a discipline, he could certainly enjoy watching those skilled in it.

Besides, modern interpretations of ancient societies never failed to be absolutely hilarious.

Never let it be said that Tip wasn't game to learn new skills. She'd even wrapped her hair in a scarf to make sure she kept it out of the dough.

Or the dough out of it, rather.

She knew herself well enough to know that that noodle dough was going to end up everywhere.

Tony wasn't laughing at him, he was laughing with him.

He was also safely chopping vegetables because he knew where his talents didn't lie.
