"I don't get it." Says Pippi.

"Is this supposed to represent the stump of the cherry tree or something?"

"No," Walter said, trying not to smirk. "It's this country's government aaying that George Washington's personal cherry tree was quite impressive."

Alanna squeaked.

"Well... He certainly wasn't Egyptian... Lets get some lunch. (http://community.livejournal.com/fh_trips/2110.html?thread=134206#t134206)"

Pippi regards the monument for a while longer.

"It's very... white."

Walter looked around at her and grinned but decided not to point out his own country's noteworthy Big Ben.

Walter spends a long time in the WWII memorial. It's hard to tell from his facial expression just what he's thinking.

"Lunch is always a good idea," Walter agreed.

Nothing like a good monument to stimulate one's appetite.

Blair stops and buys a flower to place here, standing quietly for a long time.

Nadia buys some hot chocolate from a vendor on the Mall and wanders her way over to the Lincoln Memorial.

She only has a vague idea who Lincoln was, but he certainly looked impressive. but not as cool as the Washington Monument looked over the reflecting pool when she sat down on the steps for a bit.

All this walking was starting to make her feet hurt.

She took a sip of her hot ~~brown colored water~~ chocolate and burned the entire top of her tongue.

Nadia steps up next to him silently, looking over the various wreaths and plaques. She stays there for a moment, then seems to be about to say something, then looks at Walter and smiles sadly before walking further off.

She knew he was from the forties. She knew the war happened in the thirties and forties. And she knew he mentioned something about his parents dying. It wasn't hard to figure out that he might need some time alone.

Nadia walks slowly along the wall looking at the names. Then she stops and gives a nearby homeless man a couple of dollars.

When he asks what it's for, she shrugs. "I know how you feel."

Marty is looking at the wall himself looking at the names and feeling somewhat weird about the memorial. "Kind of sad, don't you think?"

Nadia shrugged slightly as she walked back over from the homeless guy. "I think that's the point."

"When you think of all the people that died and all the people that fought for peace here. It's a lot of sad stories."

"Yeah," Nadia said softly, looking across the wall of names again. "Yeah, it is."

"Hopefully it was worth the cost."

"I think that's a time will tell sort of thing, man."

"Over fifty-eight thousand names are inscribed on this wall," Elizabeth says quietly, her hands firmly in her pockets as she moves across towards them. "That's of the dead and the missing. Nearly three million were sent to fight. This wall can't even begin to show and tell the costs."
