Saturday: Nemesis Island

It's amazing how different the atmosphere changes once you cross over the causeway to Nemesis island. True, it might be the same temperature and all but just setting foot on the island can give you goosebumps.

And if you meet up with of the residents here you might attacked for no good reason.

Which, sadly, is the slogan of the local tourism board.

After his conversation with his roommate last night, Dor headed over to Nemesis island first thing in the morning. Heeding Jan's words, he went to the armory first and got the enchanted sword from Xanth that allowed the bearer to wield it as an expert. Despite the description of this other unicorn, it was Dor's hope that he wouldn't have to use it.

He waited at the causeway until Korr crossed over for the tournament before proceeding on his mission. One he crossed over the island he used his talent to learn that Korr lived in the dark forest and followed the trail he usually used to find his lair.

He immediately began to ask questions of the inanimate objects around Korr's lair hoping to find out some kind of information about Jan's past. Unfortunately there were only tidbits of information available. He found out from a stone that Korr claimed to be a king and kept going on and on about someone named Alma. A pile of sticks also told Dor that Korr's son blames all his problems on a pied mare who enchanted his son.

Unfortunately there was no information on what flavor the pie was.

The inanimate had little else to tell Dor except Korr seemed to be a complete insane unicorn with an obsession about being pure and following this Alma's persons laws.

Dor continued to circle Korr's lair trying to learn more about Korr and see if Jan's name meant anything at all.

Unfortunately he wasn't having much luck.

[For one...]

Korr was a very pleased unicorn, at least for the most part. He had won his competition, as he'd known he would, and never mind that brief moment of madness when he'd thought his son could be salvaged.

The closer he got to his home, the more suspicious he became. There was an unknown scent, and it was a rare person who braved his lair.

He had no doubt someone had been foolish enough today; their human stink was everywhere. "I can smell you," he hissed as he approached. "I know you're in there."

Dor swore softly to himself. He was so busy trying to learn everything he forgot to have the cave alert him when Korr was returning. He didn't expect the tournament battle to go so fast!

"Stones," he whispered. "Can you pretend to be many soldiers? Follow my lead..."

Dor cleared his voice and pulled out his sword. "Men! The evil unicorn is outside! Mobilize!"

"Hup! Hup! Hup!" the stones called out. "Let's kill that nasty unicorn!"

Korr's ears flickered uncertainly, and he backed away from the cave mouth. There were many voices, but only one scent. After the girl who'd disappeared, he'd trust his nose. "Come out," he demanded. "I know you are only one. Come out, or I will come in and skewer you, there in the darquedarkness."

Dor sighed and pulled out his sword. At least he would be able to get out of the cave and into an open area.

He existed the cave, his sword pointing out toward Korr.

"I don't want any trouble," Dor announced. "If you let me leave no one needs to get hurt."

His eye rolled, showing the whites, and he reared, pawing the air. "You dared to come into my territory. For that, I will destroy you!" he cried, dropping back down to earth and lunging froward, striking with his horn.

Dor backed up as the sword immediately went into action on its own, blocking and hacking away at Korr.

"YAY! FIGHTY TIME!" the sword sang out.

"It doesn't have to be this way," Dor protested. "I apologize for trespassing. There's no reason for bloodshed!"

Korr's only reply was a shrill cry as he parried, trying to get past the sword's guard, slashing down to try and take Dor's head right off.

Dor made a sound that sounded exactly like and "EEP" as he backed off further as the sword went to expertly block the horn and then slashing outwards in an arc to try and force Korr back.

"This is exciting!" the sword exclaimed. "I've never fought a unicorn before! All the other swords are going to be jealous."

"Only if we live through this," Dor muttered.

"Oh. Good point!" the sword said as it slashed again. "Guess I better work extra hard!"

"Please!" Dor said desperately.

Korr danced backwards. "Your sword speaks," he rumbled. "What treachery is this? What madness?" The human should be a red paste by now, not swinging a pointed stick at him.

"It's a magic sword," Dor said trying to circle around Korr in case he might be able to make a dash for it. "It's specifically made for... killing unicorns."

"Gonna Gonna Gonna kill a unicorn!" the blade sang, "Gonna Gonna Gonna get me unicorn blood!"

If Dor and Korr were purveyors of television they might recognize that the blade was singing to the theme song from the television show "Bonanza". They might even wonder how the sword knows the the theme song from Bonanza.

However chances are both didn't so the song just sounded crazy.

Korr had never seen a television, so the song merely drove him into a frothing rage.

Literally - white foam spattered his coat as he tossed his head, backing further away to rear again and scream. "Stop singing! You will not kill me, no human will kill me, wretched things that they are." If it was possible, he'd have shoved his hooves in his ears to block the sound.

Dor continued to back away as the sword slashed around dramatically.

"Bloody bloody bloody corpses!" it sang, "Gonna gonna gonna hack and slash you up!"

Not waiting for any other attempt for Korr to attack, Dor started to run away.

Korr went madder, rearing and kicking, tearing up the earth at the sound of the sword, and he slammed his horn into a tree. "I'll find you!" he screamed after Dor. "You can't hide from me!"
